TLDR: Portland already beat Golden State once this month, 123-118 at Moda Center. They meet again at Chase Center for what is Portland's last preseason game, and both teams have lineup questions they need answered before the games count.

SAT 10/17, 7:00 PM

Portland closes its preseason at Chase Center against a Golden State team without Jimmy Butler, Moses Moody and Kristaps Porzingis, with Draymond Green and Al Horford both resting in the Warriors' last game. The Blazers are 3-0 in the preseason, including a 123-118 win over the Warriors in the opener, and Deni Avdija has been their best scorer. The game is mostly a look at how Portland fits Lillard and Morant together and how deep Golden State's bench goes. No lines have been posted.

Portland Trail Blazers
  • Avdija scored 23 and 26 in the last 2 meetings he played
  • Already beat Golden State 123-118 this preseason
  • Final tune-up, so regulars may play real minutes
  • Kings win came against a heavily rested roster
  • Lillard is 36, coming off a missed season (Achilles)
  • New coach, new stars, chemistry still unproven
Golden State Warriors
  • Bench won the 2nd half 51-26 vs Lakers
  • Forced 30 turnovers worth 26 points in Vegas
  • Home floor after 2 road preseason games
  • Butler and Moody out, Porzingis still away
  • Green and Horford resting, availability unclear
  • Lost to Portland in the preseason opener

There is a lot new in Portland. Micah Nori is the new head coach, the team has a new owner, Ja Morant arrived in a trade and Damian Lillard is back after missing all of last season with a torn Achilles. Portland went 42-40 last year and lost in the 1st round. At camp, Toumani Camara said the goal is a 50-win season with home court in the playoffs. The preseason has gone that way so far: Portland is 3-0 with a 123-118 win over these Warriors, a 119-66 win over the London Lions and a 110-98 win at Sacramento.

The best player in Portland's preseason has been Deni Avdija. He scored 23 in the opener against Golden State, then 26 at Sacramento as the Blazers took a 66-39 halftime lead. That Kings game needs some context. Sacramento sat Sabonis, LaVine, Monk and 3 other players on top of its injured centers, so the 27-point halftime lead tells you more about who was missing than about Portland. Lillard said at camp that his body feels as good as it has in some time, and a home crowd at Chase Center is a reasonable place to see how much he plays.

The Warriors are thin in the frontcourt and on the wing. Jimmy Butler is out with a knee injury, and the team hopes to have him back early in 2027. Moses Moody has only progressed to light on-court work as he recovers from a ruptured patellar tendon. Kristaps Porzingis is still away from the team for an undisclosed reason. Draymond Green and Al Horford both rested in Las Vegas, so whether either plays Friday says a lot about how seriously Steve Kerr is taking this one.

Even short-handed, Golden State has found something with its bench. The Warriors trailed the Lakers by 20 in the 1st half and were down 63-50 at halftime, then won the 2nd half 51-26. The Lakers turned it over 30 times, and those turnovers became 26 Golden State points. That was the Warriors' 2nd preseason win over LA. It also points to how the Blazers lost the Lakers' best weapon: the opener in Portland was a 5-point game, and Stephen Curry did not make that trip.

Two things matter Friday. Portland is a team still figuring out how Morant, Lillard and Avdija fit together, and it has 1 more chance to work on that before Phoenix comes to Moda Center for the opener on October 21. Golden State gets a look at how deep its depth chart really goes without Butler, Moody and possibly Porzingis. Tipoff is 7:00 PM PT on Friday, October 16. Whatever the score, how long each team plays its regulars will tell you more than the final.
