TLDR: Washington and Charlotte both have injury lists longer than their win totals, and Monday's game in Charlotte could hinge on who actually suits up. The No. 1 storyline is a debut that keeps getting pushed back.

Two short-handed teams meet in Charlotte, and the result likely comes down to availability: whether Washington gets AJ Dybantsa back from his ankle sprain, and whether Charlotte gets any of White, Knueppel, Boswell or Williams back to help Brandon Miller. Washington plays at Chicago first, so its form will change before tipoff. Charlotte has a bad home blowout against Atlanta and a lead it nearly blew against Miami.

Washington Wizards
  • Dybantsa's next chance to debut is Monday
  • Won both middle quarters vs Toronto, cut lead to 4
  • Beat Milwaukee 128-116 with a late push
  • Vukcevic and Watkins out long-term
  • Slow starts: down 34-21 after 1 vs Toronto
  • Plays at Chicago first, only 1 day of rest
Charlotte Hornets
  • Miller dropped 34 against Miami
  • Knueppel back doing on-court work
  • Won 2nd and 3rd quarters 65-44 vs Heat
  • White, Knueppel, Boswell, Williams all out vs Miami
  • Gave up 35-19 4th quarter to winless Heat
  • Lost 81-128 at home to Atlanta

This one tips at 7:00 PM ET on Monday, October 26, at Spectrum Center. Washington plays one more game before it, a Saturday trip to Chicago, so the Wizards that show up in Charlotte could look different from the 1-1 team on the page right now. The big question is AJ Dybantsa. He rolled his left ankle on a jump shot in the final preseason game against the Pelicans and has been ruled out for the Bulls game, which is his 3rd straight miss. That makes Monday his next chance at a regular-season debut.

The Wizards have split their 2 home games without him. They beat Milwaukee 128-116 by closing strong, then lost 112-102 to Toronto after a 34-21 1st quarter put them in a hole. Washington won both middle quarters against the Raptors and cut the deficit to 4, but the late push never came. Brian Keefe has called the ankle day-to-day. Tristan Vukcevic (hip) and Jamir Watkins (torn ACL) are long-term absences, so there's no help coming from either of them.

Charlotte's problem is the opposite: the injuries hit the backcourt, and they hit it hard. Coby White (calf), Kon Knueppel (hamstring), Kylan Boswell (knee) and Grant Williams (hamstring) all sat against Miami, and the Hornets still won 115-110 because Brandon Miller scored 34. Charlotte won the 2nd and 3rd quarters 65-44 and built a 21-point lead, then gave up a 35-19 4th quarter to a winless Heat team that turned a comfortable night into a sweaty one.

There's some hope for Charlotte on the Knueppel front. He resumed individual on-court work early last week after the hamstring strain, though he has still missed all 3 games so far. If he or White makes it back Monday, Miller gets help creating shots, and that's been the biggest hole in this rotation. If neither does, Miller is again the only real shot creator against a Washington team that has shown it can make a late run.

The 81-128 home loss to Atlanta is the result that should worry Hornets fans. That's the floor for a roster this thin, and it came at home. Charlotte's rest is clean: the Hornets have Sunday off after the Miami game. Washington flies in from Chicago on the same 1 day of rest. Both teams are short-handed, both will be checking the injury report Monday morning, and whichever team gets a starter back first probably wins it.
