TLDR: Denver is 4-2 almost entirely on its defense. Arizona is 2-4 and just won a game on 5 field goals. Something has to give Sunday in the desert, and it probably isn't the scoreboard operator's workload.

A 4-2 Denver team that wins with defense visits a 2-4 Arizona team coming off a 2-point win at the Rams. Bo Nix's passing slump runs into a Cardinals secondary missing several safeties, while Jacoby Brissett has been the more productive QB against a Broncos defense that has been thinned at corner and safety. Denver also has 10 days of rest off a Thursday game against Arizona's normal week.

Denver Broncos
  • Defense had 17 QB hits and won in OT
  • Backup DBs produced 2 interceptions without Surtain
  • Extra rest after a Thursday game
  • Nix threw for 107 yards against Seattle
  • Surtain and Hufanga ankles still unresolved
  • Close wins: 3 and 6 points the last 2
Arizona Cardinals
  • Brissett throwing for real yardage the last 2 weeks
  • Ryland went 5-for-5 on field goals, including the winner
  • McBride had 9 catches on 10 targets against Detroit
  • Allowed 31+ in each of the 4 losses
  • 3 safeties and a starting corner inactive
  • Love and Conner both out of the backfield

Start with the quarterbacks, since that's where this one gets strange. Bo Nix is in a real slump: 17 of 27 for 107 yards in the overtime win over Seattle, the same number of completions as the 17 quarterback hits his defense put on Sam Darnold that night. Jacoby Brissett is moving the ball more for Arizona. He threw for 292 yards and 3 touchdowns against Detroit, then went 24 of 35 for 218 at SoFi. The team that has been losing has the QB playing better right now, and the team that has been winning has the better defense by a wide margin.

The Broncos' defense held up without its 2 best defensive backs. Pat Surtain II and Talanoa Hufanga both sat out against Seattle with ankle injuries, and the secondary that played anyway came up with the plays. Ja'Quan McMillian picked off Darnold in overtime to set up Wil Lutz's 53-yard winner, and Kris Abrams-Draine added an interception, 3 pass breakups and a forced fumble. Whether Surtain is back on this field is the biggest open question for Denver this week.

Denver also gets a schedule break. The Broncos played on Thursday night, so they get 10 days before kickoff at 1:05 PM MT. Arizona went the full Sunday distance at the Rams and gets the normal week. The board has Denver laying points on the road, and that tells you how little anybody thinks of what Arizona did in September.

Arizona's 4-game skid wasn't close. The Cardinals gave up 31, 36, 36 and 45 in that stretch, and the Lions put up 45 at State Farm Stadium. Then came the 18-16 win at the Rams. The Cardinals were dominated on the scoreboard by field goals, Matthew Stafford hit Colby Parkinson for a touchdown with under a minute left to go ahead, and Chad Ryland answered with a 43-yarder at the end for his 5th field goal of the day. That's a real road win over a division opponent. It also shows an offense that keeps stalling out once it gets close.

The Cardinals' injury report is long, and almost all of it is in the defensive backfield. Andrew Wingard, Jerrick Reed II and Wydett Williams Jr. were all inactive at safety in Los Angeles, Starling Thomas V sat at corner, and Andrew Billings was out on the interior. On offense, Jeremiyah Love was inactive with an ankle injury and James Conner is still on IR, so Tyler Allgeier carried the lead-back role. On paper that should be a good matchup for Nix and Denver's receivers, Courtland Sutton, Jaylen Waddle and Evan Engram. The catch is that Nix hasn't shown he can take advantage of a matchup like that lately. If he can't do it against this secondary, Denver goes back to its defense and its kicker, and Arizona stays in it into the 4th quarter.
