Houston's offensive skill group is banged up around the edges — David Montgomery, Jawhar Jordan (hip flexor) and British Brooks (hand surgery) are all working back, and Tank Dell is questionable after working through a knee issue in team drills. The Chargers, meanwhile, get a healthier offensive line with Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt both back after missing time last year, even though Slater sat out a recent practice with an undisclosed issue. None of that stopped the market from swinging hard toward Los Angeles in the run-up to kickoff.
Zoom out and this is two franchises on different trajectories. Houston has made back-to-back playoff appearances under DeMeco Ryans and closed last season with a 4-1 stretch before a loss to the Patriots ended the run. The Chargers, by contrast, dropped their final 3 games of the year and now hand the offense to McDaniel hoping to get more out of Herbert. Jim Harbaugh has been upfront that his projected starters won't see the field until closer to the regular season, ramping up snap counts game by game.

Keep an eye on the guys actually fighting for jobs. Lance has spent the past year entrenched as LA's No. 2 quarterback and gets a real runway tonight to show he belongs on an NFL roster. On the other side, Mills has had a shaky camp with a couple of interceptions but is still ahead of Mertz, who's had his own accuracy issues — the battle for Houston's QB3 spot could hinge on nights like this. Montgomery, when healthy, has flashed in camp work, adding intrigue to an already crowded Texans backfield.

None of it will show up in a box score anyone remembers by September, but for the players on the roster bubble, tonight is the whole audition. Kickoff from NRG Stadium is 7:00 PM CT.
