TLDR: For 3 quarters this was a 13-10 grind in a domed building. Then the 4th quarter produced 34 points, and the Kansas City Chiefs left Allegiant Stadium with a 30-27 win, still unbeaten, while the Las Vegas Raiders took their first loss.

Kansas City beat Las Vegas 30-27 at Allegiant Stadium to move to 4-0, handing the Raiders their first loss. The Raiders led 13-10 heading into a scoreless-turned-explosive 4th quarter that produced 34 points, 20 of them from the Chiefs. Kirk Cousins threw for 365 yards on 52 attempts, but in-game injuries on both sides thinned the receiver rooms. The Chiefs held the late lead.

Kansas City Chiefs
  • Scored 20 points in the 4th quarter alone
  • Came back from 13-10 down after 3 quarters
  • Stayed perfect at 4-0 on the road
  • Tyquan Thornton ruled out with left ankle injury
  • Rashee Rice doubtful to return with hamstring
  • Allowed 14 fourth-quarter points, another 3-point finish
Las Vegas Raiders
  • Cousins threw for 365 yards and 2 TDs
  • Led 13-10 heading into the 4th quarter
  • Matched Kansas City 14 points in the final quarter
  • Cousins needed 52 attempts and threw an interception
  • Nailor lost to a concussion, receivers even thinner
  • Center Zuhn hurt his knee mid-game

The preview framed this as a protection game. Both offensive lines were missing a starter: Kansas City played without left tackle Josh Simmons, and Las Vegas played without guard Jackson Powers-Johnson. The question was which quarterback would get enough time. Kirk Cousins got enough to throw a lot. He went 31-of-52 for 365 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception, and he carried the Raiders' offense all afternoon. That's a heavy load for a quarterback whose receiver room was already down Jack Bech and Dont'e Thornton Jr. on IR.

That thin receiver room got thinner as the game went on. Jalen Nailor was ruled out for the rest of the game with a concussion, and center Trey Zuhn III was listed questionable to return with a knee injury. That meant the interior line the preview called reshuffled lost another piece mid-game. Kansas City got hit too. Tyquan Thornton left with a left ankle injury and was ruled out, and Rashee Rice was listed doubtful to return with a hamstring issue. Rice had 88 yards last week, and the preview counted him as a weapon.

The first half went exactly the way 2 matched-up, short-handed teams usually go. It was 7-7 after 1 quarter. In the 2nd, Las Vegas kicked its way to a 13-10 halftime lead, 6 points to 3. Neither team scored in the 3rd. Through 45 minutes the game looked nothing like the 34-point quarter that came next.

The 4th quarter is where this was decided. Kansas City put up 20 points in that quarter alone, and the Raiders answered with 14 of their own. Every time Las Vegas responded, Kansas City scored again. The Raiders matched the Chiefs score for score in the 4th but never closed the 3-point gap. The box score search didn't break down Patrick Mahomes' afternoon, Kenneth Walker III's carries or Travis Kelce's line, so the scoreboard has to carry the Chiefs' side of the story: 20 points in 1 quarter, on the road, with 2 receivers in the injury report.

For Las Vegas, this was the closest test yet of whether the 3-0 start was real, and the answer is mostly yes. They led into the 4th, scored 27 against a defense that had allowed 10 in 2 of its first 3 games, and lost by a field goal. The problem is the health bill. Cousins threw 52 times without Bech and Thornton, then lost Nailor in the middle of it. Next up is a road trip to New England, and the Raiders' hope is that Thornton is back at practice before then.

Kansas City is 4-0, and 2 of those wins have come by exactly 3 points. The other was the 33-30 overtime escape against the Colts. The Chiefs keep finding a way, and the 4th-quarter offense here was the best version of them this season. Their receiver room is now the concern. Thornton is out, and Rice's hamstring is worth watching this week.
