The Giants are the shorter price here, and the joint-practice week backs it up — Dart looked sharp, the pass rush reportedly won its matchups, and New York's roster has more established pieces on both sides of the ball right now. Miami's backup quarterback situation just got murkier with Ewers banged up, which is exactly the kind of thing that tilts a preseason game more than people give it credit for. It's not a blowout lock, but the Giants have the better hand walking in.

Giants
  • Dart building rhythm, strong joint-practice showing
  • Pass rush reportedly dominated Miami's O-line reps
  • Najee Harris back in live drills
  • Malik Nabers out with a knee issue
  • Rookie tackle Mauigoa left practice with a stinger
  • Coming off a loss, 2-3 in last five
Dolphins
  • Willis efficient in his Week 1 preseason debut
  • New coaching staff installing a fresh identity
  • Quinn Ewers out with a groin injury
  • Lost preseason opener to Washington, 1-4 in last five
  • Thin depth behind Willis at quarterback right now

This one is about Jaxson Dart and Malik Willis more than any scoreboard. Dart has taken over as New York's QB1 under new head coach John Harbaugh and turned heads at Thursday's joint practice with a near-clean showing, while Willis is auditioning as Miami's presumptive starter for new coach Jeff Hafley after an efficient Week 1 preseason debut. Both franchises fired their coaches this offseason, both are starting over, and this game is one of the last real evaluation windows before cuts.

The joint-practice week gave both staffs a longer look than a single preseason game ever could, and it wasn't quiet. Reports out of the sessions had New York's pass rush getting the better of Miami's offensive line reps, and tempers flared enough that it made headlines on its own. Najee Harris, working back from an Achilles injury, took part in live drills — a good sign for a Giants backfield that just added him. Miami, meanwhile, is picking through a backup quarterback spot after Quinn Ewers went down with a groin injury this week, pushing more of the load onto Willis and Mark Gronowski.

None of that will fully show up in the number Vegas hangs on a mid-August exhibition, but it's the kind of practice-field information that tends to matter more than box scores this time of year. Preseason lines move on very little liquidity, so injury and depth-chart news from the days leading in carries outsized weight relative to how the market actually reacts.

Neither team is walking in on a good run. The Giants have lost their last game and sit 2-3 across their last five outings when you count the tail end of last season, and the Dolphins have dropped two straight and are 1-4 over that same stretch — including a lopsided preseason-opener loss to Washington. Both clubs are using this game less as a résumé builder and more as a final look before rosters get trimmed.

The absences shape how this one should be read. Malik Nabers is sitting out with a knee issue that's being described as precautionary rather than a setback, and first-round tackle Francis Mauigoa left Thursday's practice with a stinger that reportedly wasn't serious — both worth watching, neither cause for panic. Miami's issue is more concrete: losing Ewers thins out an already unsettled quarterback room right as the roster crunch approaches. With both staffs still figuring out who they are, this is as much about who's left standing Saturday as who wins it.
