TLDR: The Ravens finally got Lamar Jackson back on Sunday, and lost him again on the first snap. Now a 4-4 team with a busted quarterback room gets 4 days to get ready for a Jacksonville club that just won 42-7.

Lamar Jackson is headed for thumb surgery and injured reserve, Tyler Huntley is dealing with a toe injury, and Baltimore could be down to an undrafted rookie on a short week. Jacksonville comes in after a 42-7 rout with Trevor Lawrence playing his best football, but its defensive front came out of that game banged up. The game likely turns on whether a Ravens offense that hasn't topped 13 points in 3 games can do anything against a thinned Jaguars line.

Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Lawrence threw 3 TDs in 42-7 rout of Colts
  • Defense held 2 of last 3 to single digits
  • Hunter making plays on both sides of the ball
  • Walker, Hamilton, Murray all left Sunday hurt
  • Right tackle Harrison out with torn ACL
  • Road trip on a 4-day turnaround
Baltimore Ravens
  • Stays home after Buffalo while Jaguars travel
  • Kyle Hamilton playing without an injury tag
  • Lamar to IR after thumb surgery
  • Huntley's toe could leave undrafted rookie Fagnano starting
  • Scored 10, 13, 10 in 3 straight losses

Everything about Thursday, November 5 comes down to who takes the first snap for Baltimore. Jackson had sat out 3 games with an ankle injury. On his first play back, his right hand hit Buffalo's Gregory Rousseau on a throw and he came out with a thumb injury. Head coach Jesse Minter says Jackson needs surgery and is headed to injured reserve, and when he was asked whether that could end Jackson's season, he said "potentially." Tyler Huntley then hurt his toe in the second quarter, so undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano made his NFL debut as the emergency third quarterback. Baltimore hasn't named a starter for this one, and on a short week it may not know until late.

Trevor Lawrence is the other half of this matchup, and his last outing was the best case for the Jaguars yet. He threw 3 touchdowns in the 42-7 beating of the Colts, and Tuten scored twice, once on a 39-yard run before halftime and once on a 25-yard catch. Jacksonville's defense has held 2 of its last 3 opponents to single digits. That defense also finished Sunday with Travon Walker (ribs), DaVon Hamilton (knee) and safety Eric Murray (elbow) out of the game, and right tackle Anton Harrison is on IR with a torn ACL. The number on this one went up before most of Baltimore's quarterback news did, so watch it this week.

The Ravens have bigger problems than the quarterback. They scored 10 against Cleveland, 13 against Cincinnati and 10 at Buffalo, and they have lost 3 straight. The defense gave up 35 and 36 in the last 2. Kyle Hamilton plays without an injury designation, but Roquan Smith was limited in practice with a knee issue last week, and the secondary came out of Buffalo short again: Nate Wiggins was checked for a possible concussion after a stinger, and Chandler Rivers and Jaylinn Hawkins were both inactive.

The schedule favors Baltimore on paper. Both teams played Sunday, but the Jaguars have to fly north on a short week, while the Ravens come home from Buffalo and stay put. That helps less than it should. Jacksonville's injuries are mostly on the defensive front, and whoever starts at quarterback for Baltimore probably isn't going to beat them with his arm. The Ravens' best plan is to run the ball and keep the game short, and that's hard to do after 3 games in which they haven't scored more than 13.

Jacksonville's only loss in its last 5 was the 34-31 shootout with Houston in London, and that game featured Travis Hunter catching a touchdown and picking off a pass. The Jaguars also had 2 weeks between London and the Colts game, and they looked rested. The forecast for Baltimore is mild and cloudy with about a coin-flip chance of rain and little wind, so weather shouldn't decide much. A quarterback might, and right now Baltimore doesn't have one it can count on. Kickoff is 8:15 PM ET.
