The first half was the shootout everyone expected. Carolina scored first with a touchdown in the opening quarter, and Detroit answered with a 13-point second quarter to go up before Carolina's 9 points tied it 16-16 at the break. Both teams lost players as the night went on. Detroit corner Rock Ya-Sin went out with a hamstring, which thinned a secondary already missing Thomas Harper and Brian Branch. Carolina lost rookie left tackle Monroe Freeling to a knee injury, and pass rusher Jaelan Phillips was listed questionable to return with a back problem. Carolina's line was already playing without Damien Lewis, so losing Freeling meant one more backup protecting Young.
The third quarter decided it. Carolina outscored Detroit 13-3 and took a 29-19 lead into the 4th. For a Lions team that had erased a 14-point fourth-quarter collapse against the Jets the week before, coming back from 10 down in the 4th was the job. They got 7 points, and Carolina's field goal was enough to keep a 1-score cushion. Detroit never got the ball back in a position to win it.
Detroit's defense was the problem the preview warned about, and it got worse. The Lions have now allowed 30, 41, 24 and 32 in 4 regular-season games. This time it was against a Carolina team playing without Jalen Coker, Xavier Legette and Ja'Tavion Sanders, so Young was throwing to Tetairoa McMillan, Brycen Tremayne, Darren Waller and a pair of receivers promoted this week. Losing Ya-Sin left Dan Campbell even fewer bodies at corner, and Branch's return can't come soon enough. Detroit's offense, built around Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, scored 26, which would have been enough against most teams. It wasn't enough for a defense that couldn't get stops after halftime.
Both teams leave at 2-2, but they're headed in different directions. Carolina has now scored 34 at Atlanta and 32 here, and it did this without both starting corners, its top two healthy receivers from the summer and its left guard. The Freeling knee and the Phillips back are the injuries to watch this week. Detroit has a bigger issue than any one player. The offense can put up 26 to 31 a week, the defense keeps giving that much back, and the Lions now have 2 losses in 4 games.
