TLDR: The Giants lost their franchise quarterback in September and have not lost a game since. The Saints have the quarterback they planned on, and they have lost 3 straight. On Sunday, October 18, both of those runs get tested in New Jersey.

A 3-1-1 Giants team playing on Jameis Winston since Jaxson Dart's season-ending knee injury hosts a 1-4 Saints team whose offense managed 142 yards in a 23-13 loss to Minnesota. Tyler Shough's protection and New Orleans' banged-up linebacker group go up against a Giants secondary that left Washington with Colton Hood in concussion protocol and Tyler Nubin nursing a neck injury. The Giants are unbeaten at home, but the early board still has New Orleans as a slight road favorite.

New Orleans Saints
  • Beat Baltimore on the road, 24-17
  • Defense held unbeaten Vikings to 6 points at halftime
  • Giants secondary lost Hood and Nubin in Washington
  • Shough: 96 yards, 2 INTs against Minnesota
  • Offense managed 142 total yards last week
  • Gave up 35 and 45 in consecutive home losses
New York Giants
  • 3-0 at MetLife this season
  • Unbeaten in 3 games since Winston took over (2-0-1)
  • Defense scored on a Banks pick-six against Arizona
  • Dart out for the regular season
  • Hood concussion, Nubin neck: both unresolved
  • Eluemunor questionable, and they played an overtime period in Washington

Start with the quarterbacks, because both are the story. Jaxson Dart's season ended on the opening drive of the 28-6 loss to the Rams, when 2 Rams defenders hit him on the 7th play from scrimmage. John Harbaugh handed the job to Jameis Winston and called it "more like a lane change as opposed to changing direction." Since then the Giants have beaten Tennessee and Arizona and tied Washington 27-27 in overtime. In New Orleans, Kellen Moore is still defending Tyler Shough after a game that gave Moore little to work with: 16-of-25 for 96 yards and 2 interceptions against the unbeaten Vikings.

Moore's own read was that the Saints have to protect Shough better, and he took the blame for the play-calling. That's a hard fix in 1 week. Guard Jeremiah Wright was inactive against Minnesota, and the offense finished with 142 total yards. The defense has more holes than the offense does. Linebackers Kaden Elliss and Anfernee Jennings, corner Mike Reid and defensive tackles Vernon Broughton and Nathan Shepherd (both with an illness) all sat out last week. The early board makes the 1-4 team the slight favorite on the road anyway, which says a lot about how the market rates Winston.

The Giants come out of Washington with their own injury questions. Corner Colton Hood left with a concussion and didn't return. Safety Tyler Nubin was questionable to return with a neck injury, and right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor was also listed questionable. That's 2 starters in the secondary and 1 on the line, and none of their statuses for this week is settled. They join a list that already had Chauncey Golston (neck) and Braxton Berrios (foot) on injured reserve. The Giants also played a full overtime period, so it's worth watching how the defense practices through the week.

The Saints' form is ugly once you look at the scores. They gave up 35 to the Raiders and 45 to the Falcons on consecutive weeks at home. Then they held a 7-6 halftime lead over Minnesota and gave it away when Jayden Price was stripped on the opening kickoff of the second half. Jonas Sanker's 87-yard fumble return tied it at 13, and the offense never scored again. Their only win, 24-17 in Baltimore, came back in September. The Giants are 3-0 at MetLife this season, and the Arizona game showed what this defense can do. Deonte Banks returned an interception for a touchdown and Greg Newsome II picked one off in the 36-24 win.

Kickoff is 1:00 PM ET, with a forecast in the high 40s, mostly sunny and a 12 mph breeze. That's football weather, but not enough to decide the game. What should decide it is whether Shough gets any protection against a Giants defense that has been making plays, and whether Winston can keep the turnovers down. He has been on the right side of every game since taking over, and the Saints have given him plenty to work with lately.
