TLDR: Pittsburgh needed overtime and a 13-point fourth-quarter comeback to get out of Tampa. New Orleans scored 34 straight points to get out of New Jersey. Both of them are now headed to Paris, and neither one gets to rest first.

The Steelers and Saints meet at the Stade de France in Paris, with Pittsburgh coming off an overtime comeback in Tampa and New Orleans coming off a 34-27 win over the Giants that broke a 3-game skid. Aaron Rodgers is the steadier quarterback, but Pittsburgh's secondary and receiving corps are both short-handed. Tyler Shough is playing through 2 broken bones in his non-throwing hand behind a line that just lost Cesar Ruiz. Pittsburgh is a short favorite, and the game should come down to which injury list matters more.

Pittsburgh Steelers
  • Rodgers led a 13-point 4th-quarter rally to win in OT
  • Warren called the featured player by McCarthy
  • Bernard emerging as a trusted Rodgers target
  • Secondary thinned: Echols, Murphy-Bunting, Smith out, Elliott on IR
  • Pittman and Wilson on IR; practice-squad WRs elevated
  • Offense managed 3 points through 3 quarters in Tampa
New Orleans Saints
  • Shough accounted for 4 touchdowns against the Giants
  • Scored 34 straight points once the offense got rolling
  • Shough playing with 2 broken bones in left hand
  • Allowed 35 and 45 in back-to-back home losses
  • Ruiz (knee) and McKinstry hurt; Tyson still on IR

The quarterback matchup is where this one starts. Aaron Rodgers was down 16-3 to the Bucs in the 4th quarter, then went 33-of-49 for 253 yards and 2 touchdowns and finished it with a 12-play, 70-yard drive in overtime. Germie Bernard caught the 6-yard winner. It was the 7th overtime win of Rodgers' career, and it was ugly for 3 quarters before it wasn't. Across the field, Tyler Shough threw 3 touchdown passes and ran for another as the Saints beat the Giants 34-27. That came out the same day ESPN reported he has been playing with 2 broken bones in his left hand since the Atlanta game.

That hand is the storyline to watch all week. It's his non-throwing hand, and he has been taking snaps and handing off with the opposite hand he normally uses. He and Kellen Moore both insist it hasn't hurt the offense, and 4 total touchdowns against the Giants backs them up. New Orleans also lost right guard Cesar Ruiz to a knee injury in that game, and corner Kool-Aid McKinstry got banged up. Pittsburgh's problems are in the defensive backfield. Brandin Echols went out with a hamstring in Tampa, while Sean Murphy-Bunting and Terell Smith were inactive and DeShon Elliott is on IR. The Steelers are laying a short number, which tells you nobody has a clear read on this one yet.

It's Sunday, October 25, at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, kicking off at 8:30 AM CT. The Saints are the nominal home team, but there's no Superdome crowd to lean on. The forecast as of today calls for light drizzle with almost no wind. The calendar matters for both clubs too: they flew home from road games, turn around and cross the Atlantic, and for New Orleans the bye comes right after this trip.

As of today the Steelers have won 2 straight. That doesn't hide how thin they've been at receiver. Michael Pittman Jr. and Roman Wilson are both on IR, DK Metcalf only got off the injury report late in the week with an illness, and Pittsburgh had to elevate Brandon Smith and Brandon Johnson from the practice squad. Mike McCarthy has called Jaylen Warren "our featured player right now," and if Pittsburgh can't throw it downfield, that tells you where the ball is going. The Saints are 2-4. The Giants win stopped a 3-game skid that included 35 allowed to the Raiders and 45 allowed to the Falcons, both at home. That defense is the biggest question New Orleans brings to France.

The matchup comes down to whether a short-handed Steelers secondary can keep Shough, Chris Olave and Alvin Kamara from making it a shootout, and whether a Saints defense that has been gashed all fall can stop Rodgers from moving the ball 5 yards at a time. Pittsburgh has the steadier quarterback. New Orleans has momentum from a 34-0 run and nowhere to hide on its depth chart. Both will be at a neutral site, overseas, at breakfast time back home.
