TLDR: The Jaguars have stacked up 4 wins in their first 5 games. The Texans have stacked up close losses. Sunday, October 18 at Wembley is the first AFC South meeting of the year, and Houston badly needs it.

The 4-1 Jaguars play the 1-4 Texans at Wembley in the first AFC South meeting of the season. Houston's record is worse than its play: it has almost no point differential and lost 3 games by 5 points or fewer. Trevor Lawrence and Parker Washington have Jacksonville's passing game going, and the injury reports for Montgomery, Anton Harrison and long snapper Ross Matiscik will shape the week.

Houston Texans
  • Points scored and allowed nearly even despite 1-4
  • Defense held Titans to 3 points last week
  • Stroud accounted for 2 TDs vs Tennessee
  • Montgomery groin, Woody Marks may carry the load
  • Tank Dell and Braden Smith on IR
  • Offense managed 6 points against Cincinnati
Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Parker Washington: 124 yards, 2 TDs vs Eagles
  • Lawrence threw for 331 last week
  • Outscored opponents by 53 through 5 games
  • RT Anton Harrison knee, Anderson waiting
  • Lawrence turned it over twice vs Philadelphia
  • Last 2 wins by a combined 7 points

It comes down to the quarterbacks, and both are playing well. Trevor Lawrence threw for 331 yards and 2 touchdowns against the Eagles, completing 24 of 39 passes, and that was with Brian Thomas Jr. catching none of his 3 targets. He also gave the ball away twice, on an interception and a lost fumble, against a good Philadelphia defense. C.J. Stroud got Houston its first win of the year with 261 passing yards, a 9-yard touchdown pass to Jaylin Noel and a 2-yard touchdown run. The Texans defense held Tennessee to 3 points in that game.

Houston's backfield is the main injury question. David Montgomery left the Titans game with a groin injury after 5 carries for 11 yards, and Woody Marks took over with 62 yards on 16 carries. If Montgomery can't go, Marks is the lead back in London. On the Jacksonville side, right tackle Anton Harrison left the Eagles game with a knee injury. If he misses time, a backup tackle is facing Will Anderson Jr., who played through an ankle issue last week without an injury tag. The Jaguars are favored on the board.

Jacksonville is getting results both ways. They blew out the Browns and Patriots, then won their last 2 by a combined 7 points. The Eagles game ended on Cam Little's 57-yard field goal as time expired, which he needed after missing an extra point that would have made the score 17-17 late. Parker Washington is carrying the receiving room right now: 6 catches, 124 yards and 2 touchdowns against Philadelphia, including the 51-yarder that opened the scoring.

Houston's 1-4 record looks worse than the team has played. The Texans have scored 110 points and allowed 112 over 5 games. They lost to Buffalo by 5, Indianapolis by 2 and Dallas by 4, and scored 30 or more in 2 of those losses. The Cincinnati loss, 6 points on offense, is the one they have no answer for. Jacksonville has outscored teams by 53 over the same stretch, so the gap between the teams is real, just not as wide as 1-4 against 4-1 suggests.

There are smaller injury issues to watch this week. Jacksonville's long snapper Ross Matiscik left the Eagles game with a shoulder injury, which matters in a series where the last game was decided by a 57-yard kick. Eric Murray missed that game with a concussion. Houston has safety Jalen Pitre questionable with a shoulder injury, while Tank Dell (knee) and Braden Smith (foot) are on IR. Kickoff is 9:30 AM ET.
