Both teams are also nursing bigger-picture concerns up front. Houston's offensive line was picked apart as one of the league's shakiest groups last season, and Carolina is still waiting on left tackle Ikem Ekwonu to fully return from a January knee injury. Neither situation gets fixed in a preseason finale, but how the backups hold up will matter plenty once final cuts come around.

Context matters here even with the win-loss column reset to 0-0. Houston closed last season on a heater, winning 4 of its last 5 before a January playoff exit, while Carolina limped home losing 4 of its final 5. That gap in late-season trajectory says less about this preseason tilt than it does about the different mindsets each building carries into camp — one trying to build on a playoff run, the other trying to prove last year's stretch run was the outlier.

Watch the margins here more than the result. Houston's linebacker corps takes a real hit with E.J. Speed needing surgery for a torn quad, and Carolina is still easing Tetairoa McMillan and Ekwonu back from injury while Tershawn Wharton recovers from neck surgery. Whoever the backups are that fill those gaps Friday are the ones with the most to gain — or lose — before the roster gets trimmed.
