Boutte arrives from New England, and the receiver room gets tighter
Houston filled the hole Jayden Higgins left by trading for Kayshon Boutte, closed the preseason 0-3 with the backups on the field, and got a real answer on Braden Smith's foot.
Boutte lands in Houston, and the room gets more crowded
Houston went and got a receiver the moment it needed one. The Texans acquired Kayshon Boutte from New England for safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round pick, addressing a room that had already lost Jayden Higgins to a season-ending knee injury during joint practices with the Raiders, as Kayshon Boutte Traded To Texans: Vrabel Explains Patriots' Call lays out. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel didn't make it sound like a hard call on his end, saying receiver "was one place where we do have some depth" and that Boutte "probably would have been inactive" in New England anyway — a lukewarm send-off that reads a lot better in a Texans uniform.
"Without injuries Kayshon probably would have been inactive, unfortunately." Mike Vrabel explains the trade to the #Texans and why it worked out for all sides.
DeMeco Ryans isn't hiding his excitement about the get. "Adding Kayshon is a big get for us," Ryans said, according to SI.com's Onsi Texans coverage, calling him "one of the better contested catch players that I've seen" and noting Houston has "played against him multiple times over the past couple of years" and watched him "continue to make plays time and time again." He also called Boutte "still an ascending player with a lot to improve upon" and someone he's excited to develop.
None of that shrinks the roster crunch, though — it sharpens it. "We needed to add to the receiver room and we are still trying to find who will be those guys for us," Ryans said this week, per the same report. "It won't be an easy decision because we have more guys deserving than we have spots for." Zay Jones is already producing in the meantime; his 6-yard touchdown catch against Carolina was the offense's lone score of the preseason finale.
Preseason closes at 0-3, with the backups doing the work
Carolina held off Houston 16-13 on Friday to close the Texans' preseason at 0-3, and it happened with almost none of the players who matter for September on the field. Neither team played its starters, a decision DeMeco Ryans made jointly with Panthers coach Dave Canales earlier in the week, per CBS Sports — so the score is closer to a scouting report on the roster's bottom half than a read on the team the Bills will see.

Chargers7-27Ka'imi Fairbairn was the one clean thing all night. He hit a 38-yard field goal for an early 3-0 lead and finished the game perfect — both his field-goal attempts and his only PAT converted — the kind of night a kicker wants on his résumé before games start counting. Backup quarterback Brett Rypien found Zay Jones for a late 6-yard touchdown to make it a field goal game, completing 13 of 23 passes for 101 yards on the day.
The finale still cost Houston bodies. Defensive tackle Naquan Jones picked up an undisclosed injury and defensive end Solomon Byrd an ankle injury during the loss, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports — both are questionable heading into the opener, one more thing for the training room to sort out before September 13.
Braden Smith gets a real answer, and the right tackle battle stays live
The scariest image of camp turned out to be the least serious injury. Braden Smith, carted off during Wednesday's joint practice with Carolina, has a plantar fascia issue and could miss "a few weeks" but is not considered a long-term concern, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. It matters beyond his health, too — Trent Brown has taken the bulk of the first-team right tackle reps over the last two weeks, per SI.com's Onsi Texans coverage, and Smith's absence only extends that runway.
The defensive line took the harder hit. Ali Gaye is facing an extended absence after a serious knee injury in that same Wednesday practice, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports, in a defensive end room already down Dylan Horton, who landed on injured reserve with an Achilles injury. Jadeveon Clowney, still working back from his own ankle issue, sat out that Wednesday session as well, per Wilson.
There was one piece of good news on that front: running back British Brooks is back after breaking his hand and, per Wilson, is "poised for special teams sledgehammer role" — an unglamorous job the Texans clearly missed while he was sidelined. Small consolation with the trenches still banged up, but it's a body Houston gets back before the games start counting.
Houston opens at home against a Bills team that remembers last year
It's a Sunday afternoon vs. the Bills to open the regular season, and it's a rematch loaded with recent history: Houston beat Buffalo in Buffalo last season behind a defense that sacked Josh Allen eight times, a result Bills writers still bring up when this game comes around. Buffalo enters under new head coach Joe Brady, promoted from offensive coordinator in January, with Pete Carmichael Jr. now calling the offense — a fresh voice trying to get past a team that's given the Bills trouble on the road two years running.
Buffalo comes in unbeaten this preseason at 3-0, its last tune-up a 28-27 win over the Steelers, while Houston limped to the finish at 0-3 — preseason results neither side should read much into with real football about to start. The line opened at Houston -1.5 with the total set at 44.5, a number that reads as a genuine coin flip for a season opener between two teams that know each other well.
