Kayshon Boutte says the playbook overlap from New England has made building timing with C.J. Stroud simple, as Houston closes an 0-3 preseason and turns to a Buffalo opener that doubles as a contract deadline.

Kayshon Boutte held court with reporters this week and made it plain the adjustment hasn't taken long. "It's been great. Chemistry really not a tough thing to do," Boutte said of building timing with C.J. Stroud, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston — helped, he said, by "half of playbook carryover from what I did in New England," the overlap between Nick Caley's system in Houston and the one Josh McDaniels ran with the Patriots.

He's here because Jayden Higgins, ticketed to start opposite Nico Collins, tore up a knee in practice and is done for the year, and Nick Caserio sent a safety and a 2028 seventh-round pick to New England to plug the hole, per Yahoo Sports. Boutte was just as direct about the team that let him go, saying there were "no hard feelings" — "they did pay two guys to come in and do that job... being that it's a contract year for me, I seek the bigger role," he said, adding that coach Mike Vrabel's comments about him weren't fuel so much as "an honest opinion."
What's stuck with him most is the culture he's walked into. "I like the Texans' swarm thing. That's pretty much the mindset," Boutte said, calling it a big year for him personally — and Nico Collins remains the clear No. 1 with Xavier Hutchinson, Jaylin Noel and Boutte himself still sorting out the pecking order behind him, per Jonathan M. Carolina held off Houston 16-13 on August 28 in a preseason finale that had almost nobody who matters for September on the field — DeMeco Ryans and Panthers coach Dave Canales had agreed earlier in the week to sit their starters, so the score reads as a scouting report on the roster's bottom half more than a preview of what the Bills will see. A Wyoming walk-on and a Manvel kid both made the 53
Sabastian Harsh had no Division I offers coming out of high school and walked on at Wyoming anyway, and he's not shy about who put him there. "I trusted Craig Bohl. Man of his word. We still talk. He'll send me text here and there, congratulate me. First person to give me a chance, always be really thankful for him," the undrafted defensive end said, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston. Ryans has already singled out his motor: "End of day, coaches should never have to harp on effort... that is our standard, that's who we are." Harsh knew exactly what was on the line in his final preseason snaps against Carolina: "Knew it was my last shot, important to go out and give it everything, no regrets."
Collin Wright's path is even more local. The cornerback grew up a Manvel kid, went to the Texans' own prospect day before the draft, and credits Dino Vasso and Stanford's Andrew Luck for steering him toward pro ball undrafted. "Drafted, undrafted you have to be consistent and keep giving yourself a chance," Wright said. He hasn't lost the wonder of it, either — Wilson reported Wright "remembers growing up going to games, crazy to walk into stadium that I've driven past my whole life," and he made a point to shout out his old high school program's playoff run along the way.
Kickoff against Buffalo is also Stroud's contract deadline
Sunday afternoon vs. the Bills at NRG Stadium is the obvious story, but it's carrying a second one: Nick Caserio has told reporters that if there's no extension for C.J. Stroud by kickoff, talks pause until the offseason. "We've had good discussions, with his representatives... one day at a time," Caserio said this week, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, calling the process "business as business is being done." DeMeco Ryans, at the club's season-premiere event, sounded ready to be done talking about any of it: "Now, it's time for us to stop all the talking and go show people what we're all about. So I'm excited for kickoff vs. Buffalo."
Buffalo arrives unbeaten in the preseason at 3-0, freshest off a 28-27 win over the Steelers, and this isn't a rebuilding roster on the other sideline — Josh Allen, James Cook and DJ Moore anchor the offense, and Buffalo is breaking in second-round corner Davison Igbinosun and free-agent addition Dee Alford in the secondary, per SI.com's roster projection. The line opened with Houston as 1.5-point underdogs at home, and the total opened at 44.5 — a middling number for a game that will tell us more about this roster than three preseason exhibitions ever could.
