TLDR: Colorado has put up 6 or more goals in each of its first 2 games. Calgary has scored 3 goals all season. On Thursday, October 8 at the Saddledome, one of those numbers has to give.

The Colorado Avalanche, reigning Presidents' Trophy winners, have scored 14 goals in 2 wins. The Calgary Flames have scored 3 goals and allowed 16 in 3 losses. The game's biggest variable is the schedule: Colorado plays at Winnipeg the night before, so its legs, its goalie choice and its line usage all depend on Wednesday, while Calgary comes in rested at home.

Colorado Avalanche
  • 6+ goals in each of first 2 games
  • Necas and MacKinnon both producing early
  • Scoring depth: Roy, Lehkonen, Manson all on the sheet
  • Second night of back-to-back after Winnipeg
  • O'Connor, L'Heureux out with lower-body injuries
  • Goalie Miner on IR, which thins the depth in net
Calgary Flames
  • Rested at home while Colorado travels from Winnipeg
  • 1 goal in each of 3 games
  • Allowed 16 goals in 3 losses
  • Huberdeau out with a hip injury

As of now the Avalanche look like the same team that won the Presidents' Trophy. They opened with an 8-4 win over the Kings, with Nathan MacKinnon scoring twice, then beat the Blues 6-1 with Martin Necas getting 2 goals and an assist. NHL.com says their 14 goals in the first 2 games is the second-most ever by a reigning Presidents' Trophy winner, behind only the 1989-90 Flames. That's a fitting stat to bring to Calgary, since nobody in a Flames sweater has come close to that pace this year.

One thing about this game hasn't been decided yet. Colorado plays in Winnipeg on Wednesday night before this one, so Thursday is the back half of a back-to-back, with a flight from Manitoba to Alberta in between. The Jets game will decide how much of MacKinnon's ice time is left in his legs and which goalie gets the start in Calgary. Both are open questions until Wednesday's game is over. Calgary sits at home with no game in between, which is about the only favorable spot it has had so far.

The Flames' start is rough. They're 0-3 as of Monday, they've scored exactly 1 goal in each game, and they've given up 16. Seattle beat them 6-1 twice, once at the Saddledome and once in Seattle, and Vancouver beat them 4-1 in between. Losing games is one thing, but Calgary hasn't even kept them close, and the offense has had almost nothing going since opening night.

Neither team's injury list explains much of what has happened so far. Calgary is without Jonathan Huberdeau, who went on injured reserve with a hip injury before the season, and he's the kind of veteran scorer a 1-goal-a-night team badly needs. Colorado is missing more players, with Logan O'Connor and Zachary L'Heureux both out with lower-body injuries, Georgii Merkulov on non-roster IR and goalie Trent Miner on IR. None of them are top-of-the-lineup players, and the Avs have scored 14 goals without them.

Puck drop is 7:00 PM MT. For Calgary, the encouraging version of this game is a goalie who stands on his head against a tired road team. The likely version is Colorado's skill taking over by the second period, like it did against Los Angeles and St. Louis. If the Flames are going to stop the bleeding, Colorado on the second night of a back-to-back is the best chance they'll get. Whether they can score more than once is a separate question.
