Chicago's captain is the biggest name missing. Connor Bedard had shoulder surgery in July and has only just started skating on his own at Blackhawks Ice Center, with the club still targeting a November return — more than a month into the regular season. Minnesota's answer is Filip Gustavsson, who's rehabbing a hip surgery of his own and is also ticketed for the season's opening weeks on the shelf.
That leaves this preseason window as an actual audition rather than a formality. Wild coach John Hynes has said Jesper Wallstedt and newly signed Calvin Pickard will each get two of Minnesota's four preseason starts to share the net while Gustavsson's out, and Chicago's mix of returning kids, a couple of first-year pros and a newly arrived Bowen Byram on the blue line means Saturday's ice time carries real weight for camp battles even without a line on the board.
Neither team's last-5 log has much to do with tonight — those games are from how last season wrapped up, not anything happening this week. Chicago closed its year on a 1-4 skid before snapping it with a win over San Jose, and Minnesota's most recent stretch was a first-round exit, taking one game off Colorado before the Avalanche closed it out.

The bigger story for Minnesota is what's not on that injury card: Quinn Hughes is a Wild player for a full season now after last year's blockbuster deadline trade, and camp is largely about building lines around him. For Chicago, it's Patrick Kane skating alongside the same young core that'll need to hold the fort until Bedard's back — Saturday's just the first checkpoint on that.
