TLDR: The Blues have lost 3 straight and blew their home opener in overtime. Saturday, October 10 brings Columbus to Enterprise Center, and the Blue Jackets play the night before.

St. Louis hosts Columbus after dropping 3 straight, including an overtime loss to San Jose in the home opener in which it lost an early lead for the 2nd game running. Columbus hosts Pittsburgh the night before and arrives on the back half of a back-to-back, so the goalie choice and fatigue are still open questions. The Blues' thinned blue line, without Tucker and Mailloux, against the Blue Jackets' tired legs is the matchup to watch.

Columbus Blue Jackets
  • Knies already productive: 2 goals, 1 assist in debut
  • Hung 6 on Buffalo in the opener
  • 2nd night of a back-to-back, with travel
  • Managed 1 goal in the 4-1 loss to Utah
St. Louis Blues
  • Rested, hosting a team on a back-to-back
  • Hofer opened with an 85:40 shutout streak
  • Held San Jose to 3 after allowing 10 in 2

St. Louis started the season about as well as a team can, with a 4-0 shutout in Dallas. Joel Hofer opened the year with an 85:40 shutout streak, the 2nd-longest in franchise history. Since then the Blues have dropped 3 in a row: 6-1 in Colorado, 4-2 in Chicago, and a 3-2 overtime loss to San Jose that spoiled the home opener after 3 straight road games to start the year. Jim Montgomery's diagnosis after Chicago was that his team was great in the 1st and 3rd periods and "kind of fell asleep there in the second." San Jose tied the opener in the 2nd too, so that habit has a pattern now.

There was some good news buried in the Sharks loss. The Blues tightened up after giving up 10 goals in 2 nights and held San Jose to 3. They're doing it with a patched blue line. Tyler Tucker is out after arthroscopic knee surgery and won't be re-assessed for 6 weeks, Logan Mailloux is on IR, and Justin Barron, claimed off waivers from Nashville, was skating next to Colton Parayko in practice before the home opener. Parayko moved into 2nd on the franchise's all-time games list that night, behind only Bernie Federko, and he's carrying more of the load than usual.

Before any of that matters, Columbus has a game of its own. The Blue Jackets host Pittsburgh on Friday and then travel to St. Louis, which puts them on the 2nd night of a back-to-back with a flight in between. The Penguins game will decide which goalie Columbus can use here and how fresh its legs are, and it could flip whatever mood the Jackets bring to Enterprise Center. Their season so far has swung both ways: Matthew Knies scored 2 goals and added an assist in his Columbus debut, a 6-3 opening-night win over Buffalo, and then the Jackets lost 4-1 to Utah.

The Blues are the settled side of this matchup. They've had a day off after the Sharks game, they're at home, and the problem is easy to name: they've lost an early lead in each of their last 2 games. They have been scoring first. Holding a lead for 60 minutes is the part they haven't managed yet, and a tired road team is about as good a chance to fix that as they'll get. Columbus has shown it can score in bunches when Knies and the new pieces click, and the Utah loss showed what it looks like when they don't.

Puck drops at 6:00 PM CT. On paper this is an early-October game between 2 teams still working out who they are. For St. Louis it's also the first real chance to win at home, and the 3-game skid ends one way or another. Columbus's Friday result will shape the rest of the picture, so check back once the Pittsburgh game is in.
