TLDR: Two Metropolitan clubs with banged-up rosters meet Tuesday, October 27 in Philadelphia. For both teams, the story is mostly about who's healthy enough to play.

The Blue Jackets visit the 3-7-3 Flyers in a matchup of two injury-hit teams. Philadelphia's top 2 right wings are on injured reserve, with Tippett close to returning. Columbus has been missing Provorov, Fabbro and Lundestrom. Both teams have been winning low-scoring games on goaltending, so this one probably comes down to which team's depth defensemen hold up and whether Tippett is back for the Flyers.

Columbus Blue Jackets
  • Held Vegas to 1 goal over 60-plus minutes
  • Talbot sharp in his Columbus debut, perfect in the shootout
  • Severson back from the non-roster list and scoring
  • Provorov and Fabbro both out on defense
  • Lundestrom out, center depth thinned
Philadelphia Flyers
  • Won 3 straight on goaltending before the Anaheim loss
  • Tippett eligible to come off IR
  • Michkov, Knuble, Bump and Barkey producing
  • Gave up 5 to a Ducks team that had been scoring 2 or fewer
  • Konecny and Tippett out, York uncertain
  • Season record 3-7-3

Philadelphia is 3-7-3 and has had a strange stretch. A 3-game win streak came almost entirely from goaltending and tight games: 3-1 over Ottawa, 3-2 over Colorado, 3-1 in Buffalo. Then the Flyers led Anaheim 2-0 after the 1st and lost 5-4. The Ducks hadn't scored more than 2 in any of their previous 5 games. That's the issue with winning every night by a goal. It holds up until the blue line has one bad period, and the Flyers had 2 of them.

Help could be close. Philadelphia put enforcer Garrett Wilson on waivers on October 22, and that move cleared the way for Owen Tippett to come off injured reserve once it went through. Tippett got hurt on October 15. Travis Konecny has played only 5 games and was still expected to start skating soon as of that report. Until either of them is back, the scoring is coming from the kids: Matvei Michkov, Alex Bump, Denver Barkey and Cole Knuble, who scored his first 2 NHL goals during the streak.

Columbus comes in off a game that took some grit. The Blue Jackets beat Vegas 2-1 past regulation without Ivan Provorov, Dante Fabbro or Isac Lundestrom. After the teams traded 1st-period goals, it was 40 scoreless minutes. Holding Vegas to 1 goal with that blue line is a real result, even with Mitch Marner out of the Golden Knights' lineup. Cam Talbot is new in Columbus this year. He made 20 saves and stopped all 3 shootout attempts in his Blue Jackets debut against Pittsburgh.

Both teams look similar right now: thin rosters getting by on goaltending and low scores. Columbus has kept games close without 2 of its regular defensemen. Philadelphia has been winning 3-1 and 3-2 without its top 2 right wings. That points to a tight game, and it probably goes to whichever team gets a veteran back first. If Tippett is back in the lineup Tuesday, the Flyers' forward group looks a lot less like a call-up roster.

The Flyers' list is long. Cam York's upper-body injury left Rick Tocchet unsure about him even before the Anaheim game. Nikita Grebenkin is out at least 4 months after back surgery. Columbus has the opposite problem: its injuries are on defense, and it has been patching together a blue line on the fly. Whichever team's depth defenders hold up better at Xfinity Mobile Arena at 7:00 PM ET probably wins it. If both groups struggle, the Anaheim game showed how fast this can turn into a high-scoring night.
