TLDR: The Wild come home Thursday with a blue line held together by tape, and the Blues show up off their best game of the season. Central Division hockey in mid-October doesn't decide anything, but this one will say a lot about who's actually healthy.

A depleted Minnesota defense, missing Brock Faber and possibly Jared Spurgeon, hosts a St. Louis team that has won 2 straight after a 3-game skid. Both clubs are on the same rest schedule, but the Wild are coming off a back-to-back that ended with a 5-2 loss in Winnipeg. The main things to watch are Spurgeon's status and both teams' goalie choices.

St. Louis Blues
  • Scored 12 goals across the last 2 wins
  • Avoided a back-to-back; Wild just played 2 in 2 nights
  • Thomas-Snuggerud top line driving the offense
  • Krug, Tucker, Mailloux all out on the blue line
  • Scored 5 total during the 3-game skid
  • Ottawa rout came against a depleted back-to-back team
Minnesota Wild
  • Wallstedt rested for this after starting the first 6
  • Home ice after a 4-1 and 4-2 win pair
  • Faber out indefinitely, Spurgeon questionable at best
  • Sturm and both Folignos out of the forward group
  • No goals after the 1st in Winnipeg

Start with Minnesota's medical report, because it is the story. Brock Faber is out indefinitely after surgery for a fractured skull from a puck to the head on Sept. 25. Nico Sturm went on injured reserve after another puck to the head against Vegas, and the Star Tribune noted it was the 2nd time in 3 weeks a Wild player went down that way. Jared Spurgeon took a hit in that same Vegas game, sat out in Winnipeg, and RotoWire had him out until at least Oct. 15. That's this game, so his status is the first thing to check before puck drop. Jonas Brodin also took a puck off the hand on the same shift.

Add both Folignos, Marcus and Nick, on IR, plus Filip Gustavsson on long-term IR with a hip, and the Wild lineup is a long way from the one they drew up in September. It showed in the 5-2 loss in Winnipeg, the second half of a back-to-back. Calvin Pickard made his first start of the season so Jesper Wallstedt could rest and gave up 5 on 25 shots. After a 2-2 1st period, Minnesota didn't score again. Wallstedt played the first 6 games, and with Gustavsson out there's no third option worth mentioning.

St. Louis has problems of its own, mostly on the back end. Torey Krug is on long-term IR with an ankle, Tyler Tucker is weeks away after knee surgery, and Logan Mailloux is on IR too. Up front, Dillon Dube and Alexey Toropchenko are on IR. The Blues lost their first 3 of this stretch to Colorado, Chicago and San Jose and scored 5 goals total across them. Then they beat Columbus 5-3 at home and buried Ottawa 7-2 on the road. Ottawa was on a back-to-back and missing 4 regular defensemen, so the 7 deserves an asterisk.

The Blues' projected lineup in Ottawa, per the club, ran Dylan Holloway with Robert Thomas and Jimmy Snuggerud on the top line, with Pavel Buchnevich on the 3rd and Dylan Peterson making his NHL debut on the 4th. Joel Hofer was in net. Neither team has named a goalie for Thursday. Both clubs played on Oct. 13 and get Wednesday off, so neither has a rest edge. The difference is that Minnesota is coming off its 2nd game in 2 nights and St. Louis isn't.

Minnesota's results look a lot like its injury list. The Wild lost a pair of 3-2 games in Buffalo and Tampa, then won 4-1 in Florida and 4-2 at home against Vegas, and the Vegas game is where the defensemen started going down. The Wild are 4-2-1 and the Blues are 3-2-1 as of Wednesday, so they're close in the standings. What separates them is who can still put a full defense pair on the ice.

Puck drop is 7:00 PM CT at Grand Casino Arena. If Spurgeon plays, Minnesota gets its captain back on a thin blue line. If he doesn't, the Blues get a chance to show whether the last 2 games were a real turn or just Ottawa's bad night.
