TLDR: Boston finishes its trip through California on Saturday at Crypto.com Arena. The Kings get the Bruins on the second night of a back-to-back, and that may matter more than anything in the standings this early.

The Boston Bruins (5-2-0) finish a California trip at Crypto.com Arena against the Los Angeles Kings on the second night of a road back-to-back, right after a Friday game in Anaheim. Boston had scored 17 goals in 3 straight wins as of Wednesday after a quiet 0-2 start. The Kings play no game in between and should be the fresher team. How much the Ducks game takes out of the Bruins, and who starts in goal, are still open questions.

Boston Bruins
  • 17 goals across the 3-game win streak
  • No injuries listed coming off the Sharks win
  • Minten producing: 1 G, 2 A vs Philadelphia
  • Second night of road back-to-back after Anaheim
  • Scored 1 goal in each of first 2 losses
  • Likely goalie rotation on the back-to-back
Los Angeles Kings
  • No game between now and Saturday; rested at home
  • Faces a Boston team scoring 5-6 a night lately

The Bruins have looked like 2 different teams already. They opened with back-to-back 1-4 losses to Minnesota and Ottawa, scoring once in each. Then they put up 6 on Utah, 5 on Philadelphia and 6 more in San Jose. As of Wednesday they've won 3 straight, and they're 5-2-0. That's 17 goals in 3 games after 2 in the 2 before, so it's hard to say which version is the real one.

Boston has a game in Anaheim on Friday before this one, so Saturday at 6:00 PM PT is the second half of a road back-to-back. That's the key fact for this preview. Whatever happens against the Ducks, the Bruins arrive in Los Angeles with less than a day's rest and probably a different goalie than the one who played Friday. Both of those can change before puck drop. Boston listed no injuries going into the San Jose game, so at least the roster is healthy for now.

Fraser Minten has been one of the names behind the recent scoring. He had a goal and 2 assists in the win over Philadelphia, and the Sharks' pregame notes said San Jose had to slow him down. Production from the younger forwards is the difference between the Boston team that beat Utah 6-1 and the one that went quiet in its first 2 games.

For Los Angeles, our data doesn't have a record yet, so this preview won't make up a form line for the Kings. The schedule part we can confirm. LA opened at Colorado, held its home opener against Florida, and plays 5 of its 12 October games downtown, including a Pacific Division game against Edmonton. The Kings have no game between now and Saturday. Boston plays in Anaheim the night before.

The matchup is Boston's suddenly productive offense against a home team that will have had a few days off. If the Bruins keep the pace they've had over their last 3, the rest gap won't matter much. If the Ducks game drains them or the backup goalie gets the start, the Kings have the easier setup. The board isn't open yet, and the Anaheim result will tell us a lot about what Boston has left for Saturday.
