TLDR: Vancouver heads across the continent to Raleigh with its No. 1 goalie out until around Christmas and a defense that has already given up 9 in a game. Carolina has one more stop in Montreal first, and that game decides how this one looks.

Vancouver comes to Raleigh with Thatcher Demko out until around Christmas and a defense that gave up 9 to Edmonton, though its offense has produced big scoring bursts. Carolina got its first win in Philadelphia by outshooting the Flyers heavily, with Pyotr Kochetkov back from surgery, and plays in Montreal before this game. The likely deciding factor is how Vancouver's patched-together goaltending handles Carolina's shot volume.

Vancouver Canucks
  • Scored 4 in the 3rd to beat Calgary
  • Merilainen solid in debut, 23 saves
  • Offense put up 7 and 6 on Edmonton
  • Demko out with hip, hopes for return before Christmas
  • Allowed 9 goals to Edmonton in home opener
  • DeBrusk sick, Chytil on IR
Carolina Hurricanes
  • Outshot Philadelphia badly, Woll faced 39 shots
  • Aho scored 2 and set up the OT winner
  • Kochetkov back from surgery and won his return

The Canucks' first 4 games have swung all over the place. They won 6-5 in overtime in Edmonton, then lost 9-7 to the Oilers in the home opener while Connor McDavid put up a goal and 4 assists. After that they came back from behind to beat Calgary 4-1 with 4 third-period goals, and then lost 3-2 to Vegas when Marc Gatcomb scored late in the 2nd. Vancouver has scored plenty. The problem is keeping it out of its own net, which matters a lot for a team that plays Thursday, October 8 at Lenovo Center, with puck drop at 7:00 PM ET.

Most of that comes back to goaltending. Thatcher Demko is on injured reserve with a hip problem, and Henrik Sedin, the club's co-president of hockey operations, said he hopes Demko can return before Christmas. Until then Vancouver is getting by. Leevi Merilainen, claimed off waivers from Ottawa on September 25, made 23 saves in his first start for the club in the Calgary win. That was 1 good night. A Carolina team that plays in the other team's zone all game will be a much tougher test.

Carolina got its first win in Philadelphia, 3-2 in overtime, a night after losing 5-2 at home to Washington. Sebastian Aho scored 10 seconds in and finished with 2 goals and an assist, and Shayne Gostisbehere won it on a power-play one-timer off a Jackson Blake feed. Woll made 37 saves for the Flyers and Pyotr Kochetkov needed only 16 at the other end. That's the Hurricanes game Rod Brind'Amour wants, and it's a bad matchup for a team still working out its crease.

The 16 saves were also Kochetkov's first game since December 20, after lower-body surgery. Whether he or someone else starts against Vancouver depends on how Carolina handles its trip to Montreal on Tuesday, October 6. That game is still to be played, and it will decide who is rested, who is in net and what the Hurricanes' record looks like when Vancouver arrives. Carolina also won't have Seth Jarvis (shoulder, injured non-roster list) or defenseman Alexander Nikishin. On Vancouver's side, Jake DeBrusk missed the Vegas game with an illness and is worth watching, and Filip Chytil remains on IR.

In short, Vancouver can score in bunches, as the 4-goal 3rd period against Calgary and the 7 it put on Edmonton showed, and it can also give up a lot fast. Carolina's style is to pile up shots and grind teams down. Before the Montreal game, the open questions are whether Merilainen or whoever starts can hold up under that much volume, and whether the Hurricanes' finishing catches up to their shot totals.
