TLDR: Vancouver has lost 6 straight and hasn't scored more than 2 goals in any of them. The last stop on a long trip east is Tampa, against a Lightning team that has won 4 of its last 5.

Vancouver arrives in Tampa at the end of a 6-game road trip, with 6 straight losses and no more than 2 goals in any of them, and Leevi Meriläinen in net while Thatcher Demko recovers from a hip injury. Tampa Bay has won 4 of 5 behind Brandon Hagel and Victor Hedman while Kucherov and Guentzel wait on goals. Whether the Canucks can score a 3rd goal, or hold a lead through the 3rd period, decides whether this one stays close.

Vancouver Canucks
  • Meriläinen stopped 35 of 38 against the Islanders
  • Led Florida 2-0 through 2 periods last time out
  • Last 2 losses were both by 1 goal
  • No more than 2 goals in 6 straight losses
  • Demko out with a hip injury until around Christmas
  • 6th straight road game, no road win since opener
Tampa Bay Lightning
  • Won 4 of the last 5
  • Hagel scored twice against Seattle
  • Kucherov has 8 points through his first 5 games
  • Blew 2 3rd-period leads to Seattle
  • Kucherov and Guentzel still not finishing
  • Gourde out with a hip injury

The Canucks' last game in Sunrise summed up their month. They scored twice in the 1st, led 2-0 after 2 periods, and then didn't score again while Florida came back with 2 in the 3rd and won 3-2. The Panthers did it without Barkov, Marchand, Markstrom and Gudas. Vancouver isn't getting blown out every night anymore, after giving up 7 in Carolina and 6 at Madison Square Garden. But 2 goals a night is the ceiling right now, and you don't win much at 2 goals a night in this league.

Saturday's 4:00 PM ET puck drop is the 6th straight road game for Vancouver, after Carolina, New Jersey, the Rangers, the Islanders and Florida. That is a lot of hotels for a team still looking for its first road win since opening night. With Thatcher Demko out with a hip injury, and Henrik Sedin only saying he hopes Demko is back before Christmas, the crease belongs to Leevi Meriläinen. He has earned his ice time. Against the Islanders he stopped 35 of 38 in a 3-2 loss, and that kind of night is what's keeping these losses close.

Tampa's last game ended with Victor Hedman scoring 2:07 into overtime for a 4-3 win over Seattle, after the Kraken erased 2 Lightning leads in the 3rd. Brandon Hagel scored twice and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 24 saves. The strange part of the Lightning's start is who isn't scoring. Kucherov and Guentzel came up empty again against Seattle. Kucherov has still been setting people up, with 8 points (1 goal, 7 assists) through his first 5 games, so the goals are coming from the supporting cast while the top line feeds them.

Both teams played on Thursday, so neither one gets a rest advantage. The difference is the travel. Vancouver has a short bus ride across the state at the end of a 2-week trip, and Tampa sleeps in its own beds. The Lightning have been good at Benchmark International Arena early on: they beat the Flyers 4-1, the Wild 3-2 and Seattle in overtime. Their one recent loss, a 1-4 at the Rangers, came on the road.

The injury lists aren't the story on either side, with one exception. Tampa is without Yanni Gourde, who is on the injured non-roster list with a hip injury, and that thins its bottom-6 a little. Vancouver has Jack Thompson, Akil Thomas and Mackenzie MacEachern on IR, but Demko's absence is the one that changes things. Without him, a team that can't score has no margin for error in its own end.

So the question is simple. Can the Canucks finally find a 3rd goal, or will Meriläinen have to steal one by himself? Tampa's top line hasn't been finishing and the Lightning keep letting teams back into games late, so this could stay closer than the records suggest. The Canucks still have to show they can hold a lead for 60 minutes. They haven't done it yet this month.
