TLDR: New Jersey just traded for a 3-time Vezina winner, and he started his Devils career with a win. Friday, October 30 at T-Mobile Arena, the Devils face a Golden Knights team still sorting out its own goaltending.

New Jersey brings a 4-game win streak (as of Tuesday) and newly acquired Connor Hellebuyck west, but it plays at Colorado first, so Friday is the third stop on a 4-day road swing. Vegas snapped a 3-game skid behind Adin Hill after Carter Hart's lower-body injury, and Hart's status and Mitch Marner's availability are the open questions for the home side. No board is posted yet.

New Jersey Devils
  • Hellebuyck stopped 16 of 17 in his Devils debut
  • Hischier scored twice in the 5-1 win at Dallas
  • Beat Colorado, Anaheim, LA and Dallas in a row
  • Plays at Colorado first, third road city in 4 days
  • Seamus Casey out on D after a knee procedure
Vegas Golden Knights
  • Adin Hill stopped 18 of 19 to end the skid
  • Scored 3 in the 3rd to pull away from Ottawa
  • Marner could return after missing time for son's birth
  • Carter Hart hurt in morning skate, no timeline
  • Had lost 3 straight before the Ottawa win
  • Hart's .889 save percentage before the injury

Connor Hellebuyck's Devils debut went about as well as it could. He stopped 16 of 17 in a 5-1 win in Dallas, Nico Hischier scored twice, and New Jersey was up 4-1 by the 2nd period on a Stars team that had won 5 straight. The trade happened 4 days before that start, so the Devils got a full game of evidence for what they paid for very quickly. As of Tuesday they had won 4 straight and sat at 8-4-0.

There's a stop before Vegas, though. New Jersey plays at Colorado on Wednesday, the middle leg of a road trip that goes Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas in 4 days. The Avalanche are a team the Devils beat 4-3 at home earlier this month, and how they come out of that game in Denver — who plays in net there, how much the legs have left — shapes what Vegas sees on Friday. Seamus Casey stays out on the blue line after a knee procedure that carried a 6-8 week timeline.

Vegas has its own crease problem. Carter Hart got hurt during Tuesday's morning skate, an apparent lower-body injury on a save, and was ruled out against Ottawa. Coach Ryan Craig said only that Hart is "in good hands" and that the team has "a plan here moving forward either way." That isn't a timeline. Hart has been ordinary this season anyway, 4-3-1 with a 2.76 GAA and an .889 save percentage in 8 games.

Adin Hill's answer was about as good as Vegas could ask for. He stopped 18 of 19 as the Golden Knights beat the Senators 4-1 to snap a 3-game skid. Braeden Bowman broke a scoreless game with a power-play goal late in the 2nd, and Vegas scored 3 more in the 3rd. They did it without Mitch Marner, who missed time for the birth of his second child. Getting a win with no Hart and no Marner is a decent sign of how deep this roster is. Getting Marner back for Friday would matter more than anything else on the Vegas side.

Friday comes down to 2 questions. The first is who starts in net for Vegas, Hart or Hill. The second is whether the Devils' run of goaltending and Hischier's scoring holds up after a night at altitude and a third road city in 4 days. Puck drops at 3:00 PM PT.
