TLDR: The last time these 2 met, Anaheim gave up 6 at home and lost by 1. On Tuesday, November 3, the Ducks get a rematch at Rogers Arena against a Vancouver team that sits at 3-12-1 and has just about nothing going for it except that 6-5 win.

Anaheim (6-7-1) visits a Vancouver team at 3-12-1, the worst record in the NHL, a week after the Canucks won the first meeting 6-5 at Honda Center. The Ducks have been leaking goals and still haven't named a starting goalie after Brossoit's comeback win over Ottawa. Vancouver has tightened up defensively but keeps scoring 2 a night with Merilainen in goal and Demko and Chytil out.

Anaheim Ducks
  • Gauthier has scored 4 goals in his last 2 games
  • Power play scored twice in the Ottawa comeback
  • Terry and Moore back at practice
  • Allowed 21 goals in 4 games before Ottawa
  • Starting goalie for Tuesday unsettled
  • Lost to Vancouver 6-5 a week earlier
Vancouver Canucks
  • Beat Anaheim 6-5 in the first meeting
  • Defensive structure has tightened lately
  • Boeser scoring on the power play
  • Scored 2 goals in each of the last 3 losses
  • Demko out, Merilainen carrying the net
  • Chytil newly on IR, center depth thin

That first meeting set the tone for an ugly stretch in Anaheim. Lukas Dostal faced 4.74 expected goals against Vancouver and let in 6, his worst start of the year, and Ville Husso followed by allowing 7 to Buffalo. As of Saturday the Ducks had given up 21 goals in 4 games and 36 in 8, going 1-6-1 over that run. Joel Quenneville's response was to hand the net to Laurent Brossoit, called up from the AHL, for the Ottawa game, and to call it "an opportunity" when asked whether anyone was hurt.

Brossoit's night started badly. Ottawa scored 3 in the first period, then nothing after that, and Anaheim scored 6 straight to win 6-3. Cutter Gauthier scored 2 power-play goals, and the Ducks outshot the Senators 33-23. Gauthier had already scored twice in the 7-6 loss to Buffalo, and before the comeback he said the team felt "a little disconnected." Nobody has said who starts in goal on Tuesday, so the crease is still an open question, and it's the biggest unknown going into puck drop.

Vancouver's problem has been scoring, not chaos. The Canucks have scored 2 goals in each of their 3 losses since beating Anaheim, and Toronto beat them 4-2 at home with a lineup missing several regulars. The players say the defensive structure is better than it was early, when they were losing by 4 and 5. That's a reasonable read of the recent scores. It just hasn't turned into wins, and 3-12-1 is the worst record in the league.

Leevi Merilainen made 24 saves against Toronto and has been carrying the load with Thatcher Demko out. Henrik Sedin has said he hopes Demko is back before Christmas, and it's November 2. Brock Boeser scored on the power play and Max Sasson added the other goal against the Leafs, but Vancouver lost Filip Chytil to IR on October 30. That's another center gone from a lineup already missing Akil Thomas, and the forward group is thin.

Anaheim's injury list may be about to get shorter. Troy Terry and Ian Moore are both back at practice, and Pavel Mintyukov came off IR before the Ottawa game. Terry isn't expected back right away, but he's close, and getting him back would help a top 6 that has relied on Gauthier. Ryan Poehling is still weeks away. Puck drop is 6:00 PM PT. Vancouver will be coming off a few days' rest, and Anaheim has a short flight up the coast after Sunday's comeback. If the first meeting is any guide, neither goalie is likely to steal it.
