TLDR: Edmonton is 11-2-3 with two goalies on injured reserve. Anaheim plays every night like nobody is allowed to stop a puck. Thursday, November 5 at Rogers Place, something has to give.

The Anaheim Ducks visit the 11-2-3 Edmonton Oilers on Thursday, November 5, with a stop in Vancouver first. Anaheim scores in bunches and gives up goals just as easily, which makes Edmonton's goaltending the main question. Levi and Andersen are both hurt, and Jarry had a rough October before the Oilers posted back-to-back shutouts. Both teams are short at left wing, with Hyman and Howard out for Edmonton and Greer, Terry and Poehling out for Anaheim.

Anaheim Ducks
  • Scored 5+ goals in 4 of last 5
  • Gauthier hat trick in the Ottawa comeback
  • Power play produced in the 6-3 win over Ottawa
  • Allowed 6 and 7 in consecutive home losses
  • Terry, Poehling, Moore and now Greer on IR
  • Plays at Vancouver first, so the lineup could change
Edmonton Oilers
  • Allowed 1 goal in 3 games before New Jersey
  • Home after a 3-game New York-area road trip
  • Levi and Andersen both hurt, crease thin
  • Jarry allowed 6 on 30 vs Toronto
  • Hyman and Howard out on the left side

The Oilers' record says they're cruising. Their crease says they're winging it. Devon Levi is out a few weeks with an undisclosed injury, and Mike Babcock says Frederik Andersen isn't back until "maybe" December. That leaves Edmonton leaning on Tristan Jarry, who gave up 6 goals on 30 shots against Toronto on October 24. As of late October the team's save percentage sat at .872. Since then the Oilers shut out Calgary and the Islanders back to back and held the Rangers to 1. Then the Devils scored 3 in the 2nd period at Prudential Center and won it 4-3 in overtime.

Anaheim is the exact kind of team that tests a shaky goaltending setup. Joel Quenneville's club was 6-7-1 as of Wednesday and hadn't played a quiet game in weeks. They scored 5 or more in 4 of their last 5, and they also lost 6-5 to Vancouver and 7-6 to Buffalo on home ice. Cutter Gauthier's hat trick drove the 6-3 comeback over Ottawa, with Tristan Luneau picking up 2 power-play assists. The win cost them, though. A.J. Greer went on injured reserve after a high hit from Dylan Cozens in the 3rd period, and Nico Myatovic was called up from San Diego to fill in.

Anaheim plays in Vancouver on Tuesday, November 3 before this one, so the Ducks who show up in Edmonton will have a fresh result, and possibly a different goalie in line, after that trip. The board stays closed until that game is in the books. Edmonton has no game in between. The Oilers come home from a 3-game swing through the Islanders, Rangers and Devils, and the overtime loss in New Jersey was their last game before Thursday.

Both clubs have holes up front, and a lot of them are on the left side. Edmonton lost Zach Hyman to injured reserve with a stiff neck after he hit the glass in the Detroit loss, Isaac Howard is out too, and Matt Savoie and Mattias Janmark are on long-term injured reserve. Anaheim is still waiting on Troy Terry. Reports say he's close but not imminent. Ryan Poehling is out 6-8 weeks with an MCL sprain, and Quenneville says Ian Moore is still "a ways from skating." With Greer now out as well, the Ducks' bottom 6 is mostly call-ups and guys playing up the lineup.

The game comes down to one question: is Edmonton's goaltending the version that posted back-to-back shutouts, or the one that gave up 6 to Toronto? Anaheim's attack can make the Oilers pay for a bad night in net. Its defense has also given up 6 and 7 at home inside the last 2 weeks. Puck drop is 7:00 PM MT. Expect plenty of goals.
