TLDR: Calgary's season has started worse than any in franchise history, and their reward is a Thursday night in Vegas against a Golden Knights team that is winning on short rest. The Flames have to play Anaheim first, and that result decides what kind of team shows up at T-Mobile Arena.

A winless Calgary team, scoring 8 goals and allowing 27 through 5 games, visits a Vegas club that won 5-2 at Nashville on the second night of a back-to-back. Calgary plays at Anaheim first, which decides whether it arrives still chasing its first point. The Flames are also without left wingers Huberdeau and Honzek, which leaves a forward group that already can't score even thinner against an Eichel-led Golden Knights team at home.

Calgary Flames
  • Day off between Anaheim and Vegas
  • Anaheim result could end the skid first
  • Outscored 27-8 through 5 games
  • Honzek out week-to-week, Huberdeau on IR
  • Held to 1 goal in 3 of 5
Vegas Golden Knights
  • Eichel had 12 points through 7 games
  • Won 5-2 on back-to-back's second night
  • Closed Nashville with a 2-0 third period
  • Coming off consecutive road nights
  • Let Nashville hang around through 2 periods

Here's the damage so far. Through 5 games the Flames have no standings points, and FlamesNation notes it's the first time in franchise history Calgary got through its first 5 without one. They've been outscored 27-8. The defense has been bad and the offense hasn't been much better. Calgary has scored more than 1 goal only twice, and it has given up 6 twice, both times to Seattle.

There's a game in between, too. Calgary was set to go back at the Ducks in Anaheim before this one, after losing to them 2-4 at home. If the Flames get their first points there, Thursday is a team that just got the weight off its back. If they don't, they head to Vegas with the skid still going and a lot more noise around it. Either way, Calgary gets the off day before puck drop at 7:00 PM PT.

Vegas is in a very different spot. The Golden Knights went into Nashville 5-2-0, and Jack Eichel had 3 goals and 9 assists for 12 points through 7 games. Then they finished off a road back-to-back with a 5-2 win. It was 3-2 after 2 periods, and Vegas won the 3rd 2-0 on a night when the Predators were the rested team. They come home with a day off before this one.

The form card is all Ls, but the scores tell you more. Calgary lost the Avalanche game 3-7 and both Kraken games 1-6. When better teams have pushed the pace, this team has come apart. Vegas just showed it can do exactly that late, finishing the Predators with 2 unanswered goals in the 3rd. If the Golden Knights' depth keeps rolling the way it did in Nashville, that's the matchup that matters.

Calgary's forward group is also thinner than the one that opened the season. Jonathan Huberdeau has been on injured reserve with a hip problem since before the opener. Samuel Honzek is now out week-to-week with a lower-body injury, per the club's Monday update. That's 2 left wingers gone from a team that already can't score, so more minutes go to depth forwards who haven't produced either.

There isn't much mystery here. Vegas is a contender playing like one, at home and rested. Calgary is trying to find out whether it's a bad start or a bad team. The Anaheim game settles some of that before Thursday, and the Flames' play over the first 2 periods in Vegas will settle the rest.
