TLDR: Philadelphia's season started with a franchise-record losing streak and has since turned into something that looks like hockey. Wednesday at Capital One Arena shows whether that holds up against a Washington team that has been waiting at home for them.

Philadelphia has dug out of an 0-7 start to reach 3-7-3 as of October 25, but plays Columbus at home the night before and arrives in Washington on the back end of a back-to-back, while missing Konecny, Tippett and Grebenkin. Washington (6-4-0) gets 3 days of rest and Alex Tuch's scoring touch, but Logan Thompson's lower-body injury leaves Charlie Lindgren as the likely starter. The Flyers' fatigue against the Capitals' goaltending question frames the matchup.

Philadelphia Flyers
  • 3-2 in last 5, including 1-goal wins over COL and BUF
  • Built leads of 2-0 and 3-2 against Anaheim
  • Second night of a back-to-back after hosting Columbus
  • Konecny and Tippett both on IR
  • Blew 2 leads in the 5-4 loss to Anaheim
Washington Capitals
  • 3 days of rest, no game in between
  • Tuch scored twice, including the OT winner vs Buffalo
  • Home in DC against a tired road team

The Flyers got here the hard way. They opened 0-for-7, a franchise record, and Rick Tocchet admitted after the 7th loss that he had no answers. As of Sunday they are 3-7-3. More important, they have shown a pulse: 3-2 in the last 5, including 1-goal wins over Colorado and Buffalo. They have done it while short at forward. Travis Konecny and Owen Tippett are both on injured reserve, and Nikita Grebenkin is out at least 4 months after back surgery.

The schedule is the story. Philadelphia hosts Columbus on Tuesday, October 27, then turns around and plays in Washington the next night. Whatever the Flyers look like coming out of the Columbus game, this one is the second half of a back-to-back on the road. The Capitals play nobody in between. Their last game was the Sabres win on October 24, so they get 3 full days off before puck drop at 7:30 PM ET.

Washington's question is in net. Logan Thompson picked up a lower-body injury in the 5-2 loss to the Kings and is now on injured reserve. Charlie Lindgren started against Buffalo, and the club recalled Mitch Gibson from Hershey to back him up. Whether Thompson is close to returning by Wednesday is the biggest open question for the home side.

The Capitals at 6-4-0 have been a different kind of streaky, alternating wins and losses with some leaky nights mixed in. The Buffalo game summed them up. They started badly, clawed back to lead 3-2 after 2 periods, and won it 4-3 in overtime when Alex Tuch beat his old team for his 2nd goal of the night. Tuch's finish is a real asset. A team that keeps needing comebacks is not.

For Philadelphia, the Ducks loss is the one to think about. The Flyers led 2-0 and then 3-2 in the 2nd period and still lost 5-4 at home, which ended a 3-game winning streak. Tocchet said his group thought it would be "a bit of an easy" game and "let them off the hook." On Wednesday, in a building where the other team has had 3 days of rest, a lead like that has to be protected on tired legs. The thing to watch is whether the Flyers' structure holds up past the 2nd period, and who is in Washington's crease.
