TLDR: Vancouver's 2 games against Edmonton had 27 goals in them, and the Canucks still have Calgary to deal with before Vegas gets to Rogers Arena. Sunday's game is the second night of a back-to-back for the home side, and the Golden Knights will have had a day off.

Vegas visits Vancouver on Sunday. The Golden Knights will have had a day off, and the Canucks will be on the second night of a back-to-back after hosting Calgary on Saturday. Vancouver has scored plenty but given up 14 goals in 2 games against Edmonton without Thatcher Demko. Vegas beat Chicago 5-2 and then lost to Anaheim after falling behind 4-0, so the game likely comes down to which team avoids another early hole and how much Vancouver has left after Saturday.

Vegas Golden Knights
  • Rested, no game between Anaheim and Sunday
  • Hart stopped 24 of 26 in opener
  • Eichel and Connelly both scored against Chicago
  • Fell behind Ducks 4-0 through 2 periods
  • Ducks did it while missing Terry and 2 defensemen
Vancouver Canucks
  • 13 goals scored in 2 games
  • Rossi scored 2 in the third against Edmonton
  • Opened with OT win in Edmonton
  • Second night of back-to-back after Calgary
  • Allowed 14 goals in 2 games
  • Demko out, Chytil and Thomas out at center

This is an early preview, and it can't be a full one yet because Vancouver hosts the Calgary Flames on Saturday. That game will settle 2 things before Sunday: how much the Canucks lean on their top guys, and who ends up in net with Thatcher Demko on injured reserve. Vegas has no game in between. The Golden Knights get a full day to travel north and reset, while Vancouver turns right around and plays again at 6:00 PM PT on Sunday, October 4.

There's no hiding the Canucks' first week. They opened in Edmonton and won 6-5 in overtime after leading 5-2 and letting it get away. Then they came home and gave up 4 goals in the first period and 8 in 2 periods of a 9-7 loss. Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard took over that game. Marco Rossi scored 2 in a third-period push that made the final look closer than the game was. Vancouver can score. It just can't defend yet, and it's doing all of this in front of a goalie group that won't have Demko back until around Christmas, per Henrik Sedin.

Vegas has had its own up-and-down week under first-year head coach Ryan Craig. The opener was a clean 5-2 win over Chicago. Carter Hart stopped 24 of 26, Jack Eichel picked up his 700th career point, and 19-year-old Trevor Connelly scored in his NHL debut. Craig gave credit to all 3 defensive pairs that night. Two nights later Anaheim led 4-0 through 2 periods at T-Mobile Arena before Vegas scored 3 in the third and ran out of time.

Both clubs have a slow-start problem. Vegas fell behind by 4 at home against a Ducks team missing Troy Terry and 2 defensemen. Vancouver fell behind by 4 after 1 period against Edmonton. Both came back late, and neither comeback finished the job. The team that plays a clean first 20 minutes on Sunday probably decides this, and Vegas looks better set up to do it. The Golden Knights will have rested legs and a defensive structure that held up well in the opener. Vancouver is giving up goals in bunches and playing its second game in 2 nights.

The Canucks' injured list hurts their depth more than their stars. Filip Chytil and Akil Thomas are both out at center, and Jack Thompson is out on the blue line. On a back-to-back, that means the bottom of the lineup takes more minutes on the second night. Demko is the absence that matters most, because whoever starts Saturday against Calgary probably doesn't start Sunday. Keep an eye on that, and on how many minutes Vancouver's top players log against the Flames.

For Vegas, the questions are whether Hart looks like the opening-night version and whether Eichel and Mark Stone can push the pace against a defense that has given up 14 goals in 2 games. Connelly is the fun subplot: a teenager 2 games into his career, about to play a team that has spent the week chasing games. If Vegas avoids digging another 4-goal hole, this sets up well for the visitors. If not, Rogers Arena has already watched a 16-goal game this week.
