TLDR: Philadelphia has 6 games behind it and no wins. The Hurricanes come to town Sunday, and they've already beaten the Flyers once this month.

The Hurricanes visit the winless Flyers on Sunday on the back end of a back-to-back that starts in Chicago on Saturday. Philadelphia is 0-4-2, has scored 1 goal in each of its last 3 games, and will probably be without Travis Konecny and possibly Cam York. Carolina's top line has been rolling, so the main open question is how much the Chicago game and the travel take out of the Hurricanes, starting with who plays in goal.

Carolina Hurricanes
  • Aho and Svechnikov on 4-game point streaks before Chicago
  • Already beat Philadelphia 3-2 on October 3
  • Kochetkov sharp, held Vancouver to 2
  • Second night of a back-to-back after Chicago
  • Jarvis and Nikishin both out
  • Lankinen allowed 6 on 18 shots last start
Philadelphia Flyers
  • Played a Saturday matinee, so more rest than Carolina
  • Lost to Carolina by 1 with a similar setup
  • Grans activated to patch the blue line
  • 1 goal in each of the last 3 games
  • Konecny expected out, York day-to-day
  • Only 14 shots on goal in Boston

Carolina has a stop to make first. The Hurricanes are at Chicago on Saturday night, so Sunday in Philadelphia is the second half of a back-to-back with a flight in between. That Blackhawks game decides most of what this preview can't know yet: who starts in net, how heavy the top line's minutes were, and whether a 3-game winning streak as of Friday is still alive. Philadelphia already played its Saturday game, a matinee in Boston, so both teams go into this one on consecutive days. The Flyers just had the longer night of sleep.

The Flyers' injury list grew in a single afternoon. Travis Konecny has a lower-body injury from a hit on Tim Stützle in the Ottawa loss and is expected to miss Sunday. Cam York is day-to-day with an upper-body injury, Rasmus Ristolainen went on IR retroactive to October 3, and Nikita Grebenkin is out at least 4 months after back surgery. Helge Grans was activated from the non-roster list, which gives Rick Tocchet a body on the back end, but he's still short 2 of his regular defensemen and his best winger.

The scoring has been the real problem. Philadelphia has 1 goal in each of its last 3 games, and in the 5-1 loss in Boston, Porter Martone scored the only goal while Jeremy Swayman needed just 14 saves. You don't come back from 14 shots on goal, and losing Konecny takes out the guy most likely to change that.

Carolina is in the opposite spot. The Hurricanes' 7-2 win over Vancouver started with 2 Andrei Svechnikov power-play goals in a 3-goal 1st period, and Logan Stankoven added the first hat trick of his NHL career. Going into Chicago, Sebastian Aho had 4 goals and 4 assists, and Aho and Svechnikov were both on 4-game point streaks. Pyotr Kochetkov has been sharp too. After Kevin Lankinen was pulled for allowing 6 goals on 18 shots, Kochetkov held Vancouver to 2 goals, both from Jake DeBrusk. Carolina still has its own injuries: Seth Jarvis is on the non-roster list with a shoulder injury, and Alexander Nikishin is out on defense.

These 2 played on October 3 in Philadelphia, and Carolina won 3-2. That was a 1-goal game with a healthier Flyers lineup than the one dressing Sunday. Puck drop is 7:00 PM ET at Xfinity Mobile Arena. The Flyers need something to go right, and the schedule has given them a tired opponent. Carolina's 6-goal and 7-goal games came against Montreal and Vancouver, so the question is whether Philadelphia can make this a 1-goal game again with half its regulars out.
