TLDR: Carolina is scoring like the regular season owes it money, and Winnipeg is trying to win hockey games without the goalie who used to make that easy. Saturday afternoon at Canada Life Centre puts both of those to the test.

Carolina comes in hot and rested but thin down the middle, with Jordan Staal out 1-2 months on top of Taylor Hall, Seth Jarvis and Alexander Nikishin. Winnipeg is playing without the suspended Connor Hellebuyck, has been winning mostly by one goal, plays in Chicago first, and is waiting on Josh Morrissey's wrist. It likely comes down to whether a depleted Carolina center group can hold off Scheifele and Connor, and whether Stuart Skinner can hold up against a team scoring 5 a night.

Carolina Hurricanes
  • Scoring 26 goals across 5-game win streak
  • 3 days of rest before Saturday
  • Jets play in Chicago Thursday first
  • Staal out 1-2 months with calf tear
  • Hall, Jarvis and Nikishin all out
  • Lost shutdown center for Scheifele matchup
Winnipeg Jets
  • Scheifele and Connor still anchor the offense
  • Home ice after only 1 midweek game
  • Ferraro adds physical depth on the blue line
  • Hellebuyck suspended; Skinner and Milic in goal
  • Morrissey day-to-day with wrist injury
  • 3 of 4 wins by a single goal

The Hurricanes have won 5 straight as of Tuesday and scored 26 goals doing it, including a 7-2 beating of Vancouver and a 6-4 shootout-free track meet in Montreal. They did all of it on the road in 3 of the 5. Carolina gets the rest of the week off before puck drop at 2:30 PM CT on Saturday, October 17, which is a real luxury for a team that played back-to-backs against Chicago and Philadelphia in that run.

The bodies are the issue. Captain Jordan Staal tore his calf in warmups before the 4-1 win in Philadelphia, and Rod Brind'Amour says he's out 1-2 months. Taylor Hall is listed out, Alexander Nikishin is out on the back end, and Seth Jarvis has been on the injured non-roster list with a shoulder since late September. That's a lot of the middle of the lineup gone, and Staal is the guy Carolina hands its hardest defensive matchups to.

Winnipeg's story started in August, when Connor Hellebuyck went public with a trade request. He skipped training camp and the Jets suspended him, and GM Kevin Cheveldayoff has said the door is still open. In the meantime the net belongs to Stuart Skinner, who signed for 2 years in July, with Thomas Milic behind him. Cheveldayoff admitted it will take more than one player to cover for one of the best goalies of his generation. No board is posted for this one yet.

So far the Jets have gotten by. They opened 4-1-1, but look at how the wins came: 3 straight 3-2 games against Detroit, Pittsburgh and Colorado, then a 5-1 home loss to Anaheim, then a 5-2 win over Minnesota. That's a team living on the edge and mostly getting away with it. Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor are still the engine up front, and Mario Ferraro came over from San Jose to add some bite on the blue line.

There's a game in between for Winnipeg. The Jets visit Chicago on Thursday, October 15, before coming home for this one, so whatever their form looks like now could change, and their goalie rotation could too. Carolina, meanwhile, sits on 3 days of rest. Those Blackhawks are the same team the Hurricanes beat 5-2 last weekend, so Thursday is also a decent measuring stick for how the Jets stack up.

The Jets have their own blue-line problem. Josh Morrissey left the Colorado game after hitting the boards and is day-to-day with a wrist injury. He missed the Wild game, and whether he plays Thursday in Chicago is the first clue about Saturday. Without him, Winnipeg's defense has to handle a Carolina forecheck that has been rolling 4 lines and burying teams.

This game probably gets decided down the middle. Carolina's offense has kept going without Hall and Jarvis, but losing Staal takes away the shutdown center who soaks up the tough minutes against guys like Scheifele. If Winnipeg's top line finds room against a thinner Carolina middle, the Jets can grind out another one-goal game at home. If the Hurricanes keep shooting from everywhere, a goalie who isn't Hellebuyck is going to be under siege all afternoon.
