TLDR: Two of the best starts in hockey meet at Rogers Place on Thursday, October 22. Edmonton is 7-1-1 and Carolina is 7-2-1, and both are playing through injury lists long enough to fill a third line.

Edmonton (7-1-1) hosts Carolina (7-2-1) in a meeting of two strong starts. The Hurricanes' 7-game win streak, built on defense, ended with a late loss in Calgary, and they are missing Jordan Staal, Mark Jankowski and Seth Jarvis down the middle. The Oilers are winning with their power play and McDavid's point streak and may get Ryan Nugent-Hopkins back for this game, though Frederik Andersen is out until around December.

Carolina Hurricanes
  • Allowed 2 or fewer goals in 4 straight wins
  • Won 7 straight before the Calgary loss
  • Jarvis skating with the team on the road trip
  • Staal, Jankowski and Jarvis all out at center
  • Deep into a 5-game western road trip
  • Gave up a late winner in Calgary
Edmonton Oilers
  • Power play scored 3 goals against Minnesota
  • McDavid point streak still alive
  • Nugent-Hopkins could return Thursday
  • Andersen out until maybe December
  • Dickinson, Savoie, Janmark out down the middle
  • Blew a 3-1 lead late against the Wild

Carolina came west after one of the best runs in the league. The Hurricanes had won 7 straight before Yegor Sharangovich scored late in the 3rd to give Calgary a 3-2 win. That was the second night of a back-to-back and Carolina's first road loss of the season. The streak was built on defense: in the 4 wins before Calgary, nobody scored more than 2 goals on them.

They have been doing it without much of their middle. Jordan Staal is on IR, Seth Jarvis hasn't played yet this season after shoulder surgery in June, and Mark Jankowski was sent back to Raleigh to get a lower-body injury checked. Rod Brind'Amour is running his center depth chart on fumes. Jarvis travelled and skated with the team on this road trip, so he is the name to watch on Thursday morning.

Edmonton's last game was a typical Oilers win. They beat Minnesota 4-3 in overtime with 3 of their 4 goals on the power play. The Wild came back from 3-1 down with 2 late goals, then got caught with too many men in OT, and Evan Bouchard won it on the 4-on-3 with 1:28 left. Connor McDavid had 2 assists and kept his point streak going. Through 9 games, special teams have carried this group in the tight ones.

The Oilers have help on the way. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (lower body) has been skating with the team and was reported on track to return either Thursday or Saturday, so he could be back for this one. That matters with Jason Dickinson out and Matt Savoie and Mattias Janmark both on IR. Goaltending is the long-term worry: Frederik Andersen (knee) isn't expected back until "maybe" December, per Mike Babcock.

So the matchup is Carolina's structure against Edmonton's power play. The Hurricanes have held almost everyone to 2 goals, but a short-handed center group means more defensive-zone draws for players who don't usually take them. The Oilers have split their 2 games with Utah and won 4 of their last 5, and they don't need many chances to score. Puck drop is 7:00 PM MT.
