TLDR: Winnipeg and St. Louis have both lost 2 straight, and both are missing defensemen they'd planned the season around. Tuesday at Enterprise Center is a test of which team's depth holds up better.

Winnipeg (4-2-2) visits St. Louis (3-4-1) with both clubs on 2-game skids and both playing without key defensemen: Josh Morrissey for the Jets, and Krug, Tucker and Mailloux for the Blues. The Blues' goaltending is the main question, since Hofer is the No. 1 and Binnington has struggled early. No betting lines had posted at the time of writing.

Winnipeg Jets
  • Scheifele and Iafallo scoring, built 2 leads vs Carolina
  • 5-2 win over Minnesota shows the offense has upside
  • Rest even: both teams last played October 17
  • Morrissey out week-to-week with a wrist injury
  • Hellebuyck absent; still on IR amid a trade request
  • Scoreless 3rd vs Carolina, outscored late lately
St. Louis Blues
  • Can score fast: 12 goals vs Columbus and Ottawa
  • Hofer gives a clear No. 1 in net
  • Home after the road trip

The Jets' trouble in their last game wasn't effort. Against Carolina, Mark Scheifele and Alex Iafallo gave Winnipeg a lead twice in the 2nd period, and the Hurricanes tied it both times. Nikolaj Ehlers then won it for Carolina with a power-play goal against his old team at 6:43 of the 3rd. That came on a 1-day turnaround after a 4-3 loss in Chicago, and the Jets didn't score in the final 20 minutes. At 4-2-2 they're still in decent shape, but over the last 5 games they've gone 2-3, losing 5-1 to Anaheim and getting outscored late.

The bigger story is who isn't playing. Josh Morrissey left the October 7 win over Colorado with a wrist injury and has been downgraded to week-to-week, per The Hockey Writers, though he isn't expected to need surgery. Losing your best defenseman takes a lot of the offense away from the back end. Connor Hellebuyck is still listed on injured reserve and, per reporting, has been away from the team while asking for a trade, so another goalie has been in Winnipeg's net all October. Vladislav Namestnikov is out too. The board hasn't posted a number on this one yet.

St. Louis has had a stranger 8 games. The Blues lost at home to San Jose, then scored 12 goals across wins over Columbus and at Ottawa, then gave up 10 in back-to-back road losses at Minnesota and Nashville. The 5-2 loss in Nashville finished the road trip badly. The Predators had scored exactly 2 goals in each of their previous 3 games, put up 5 against St. Louis, and kept the Blues off the board in the 3rd period.

In goal, St. Louis has a clear order. Bleedin' Blue described the crease as Joel Hofer's net as of October 12. Jordan Binnington had a .847 save percentage through his first 2 starts, and his numbers were poor even in the 5-3 win over Columbus, when Jake Neighbours scored his first of the year and the top line finally produced. The Blues haven't announced Tuesday's starter. Whether it's Hofer or Binnington is the main thing to watch on the home side.

The Blues' injury list is mostly defensemen. Torey Krug is on long-term IR with an ankle injury, Tyler Tucker had knee surgery and won't be reassessed for weeks, and Logan Mailloux is on IR too. Add Ross Johnston up front, and St. Louis is playing a reworked defense in front of an uncertain goalie. That matches up against a Jets offense that got 5 goals against Minnesota and still has Scheifele scoring. Neither defense looks settled, so this probably goes to whichever team gets more saves in its own end. Puck drop is 7:00 PM CT.
