Florida is in the middle of its own triage. Aleksander Barkov is out roughly 6-8 weeks with a lower-body injury, Brad Marchand is on IR, and Jacob Markstrom went down in practice on October 19 after a shot caught him in the shoulder. Paul Maurice called it 10-14 days at the time, so Friday lands right inside that return window. That makes the Panthers' crease the biggest open question on the page.
Until Markstrom is back, it's Akira Schmid's net, with Cooper Black up from Charlotte behind him. Schmid was sitting at .878 through his first 4 appearances, then stopped 18 of 19 in Winnipeg. Against a team generating this little, that's the kind of night that can look better than the goalie actually is. Florida's own form has swung too: an 8-3 win over Seattle, back-to-back road losses at Ottawa (1-5) and Pittsburgh (0-4), then wins over Chicago and Winnipeg.
The schedule is the angle to watch. Florida has nothing on the calendar between Tuesday's win and this one, so the Panthers get home and get rest. Winnipeg plays at Tampa Bay on Thursday and then has a quick hop across the state for a 7:00 PM ET puck drop Friday, the second night of a back-to-back. That Lightning game tells us whether this is still a skid or whether the Jets come into Sunrise having broken it. It also decides who's fresh in net and how many minutes the depth guys have already played.
Even 4 days after the first meeting, the matchup comes down to the same thing. Can Winnipeg's reshuffled forward group generate enough to test a Florida goalie who isn't the starter? The Jets have lost 5 games in which they scored a combined 7 goals, and a win in Tampa would change that story fast. If Markstrom is back by Friday, the margin for error gets even smaller for a team that hasn't had any.
