TLDR: The Los Angeles Kings have spent October scoring a single goal a night, and on Tuesday, October 20 they bring that problem to a Capitals team that just put 4 on New Jersey. Washington has a banged-up lineup. Los Angeles has a goal-scoring problem, and that's the bigger worry.

The Kings come east having scored 1 goal in each of their reported losses this month. They were still looking for their first regulation win of the season and are missing Zuccarello and Turcotte. Washington was 5-3-0 as of Saturday and had won 2 straight despite playing without Dubois, Sourdif and Roy. How many of those 3 are back for Tuesday will shape this game.

Los Angeles Kings
  • 2 of the early losses went to overtime
  • Scored 31 seconds in against Boston
  • Washington thin on the blue line without Roy and Sandin
  • 1 goal in each of the 4 reported losses
  • No regulation win through the first 5 games
  • Zuccarello and Turcotte on injured reserve
Washington Capitals
  • Scored 3 in the 2nd period against New Jersey
  • Leonard and Protas producing while veterans sit
  • Roy cleared for contact, return possible
  • Dubois on IR and missed 4 straight games
  • Sourdif out sick, forward depth stretched
  • Gave up 5 to Seattle and 4 to Montreal at home

Start with the Kings, because their scoring problem is the main story here. They lost the home opener 2-1 to Florida, lost 2-1 in overtime to Vegas, lost 4-1 to Edmonton and then lost 4-1 to Boston. That's 1 goal in each of those games. By mid-October they had just 2 points through 5 games and no regulation win, though 2 of those losses went to overtime, so they haven't been getting blown out. Mostly they've been losing close games because they can't finish.

The Boston game showed it. Los Angeles scored 31 seconds in, then didn't score again. Jeremy Swayman stopped 25 of 26, and the Bruins scored 4 straight, 2 of them into an empty net, on the second night of a back-to-back. The Kings are also playing without forwards Mats Zuccarello and Alex Turcotte, who went on injured reserve before the Vegas game, and that thins a forward group that already isn't scoring. There's no pick on the board for this one yet, so the matchup has to carry it.

Washington has its own problems, mostly on the injury report. Pierre-Luc Dubois went on IR and missed his 4th straight game against the Devils. Justin Sourdif has been out sick too. On defense, Matt Roy missed his 6th straight game with a lower-body injury even after practicing in full, and Rasmus Sandin is on long-term injured reserve with a knee injury. The Capitals have still won 2 straight as of Saturday, and they've been getting goals from all over the lineup without those guys.

The Devils win was a good example. It was 1-1 after the 1st. Ryan Leonard scored on the power play, then Ilya Protas, Dylan Strome and Boone Jenner scored in a 3-goal 2nd period that put Washington up 4-1. Leonard and Protas are young forwards getting real minutes with Dubois and Sourdif out, and they're producing. The 5-4 win over Montreal before that was messier, but it counted. Washington was 5-3-0 as of Saturday, with home wins over the Rangers, Canadiens and Devils and a home loss to Seattle.

The Capitals' injury news could matter before Tuesday. Roy has already been cleared for contact, and Carbery said Dubois was feeling a little better and might be back at practice this week. If either returns, Washington's lineup gets deeper and less dependent on its rookies. On the other side, the Kings flew across the country after a home loss with a 7:00 PM ET puck drop waiting. A team that has scored 1 goal a game now has to beat Washington on the road, and the Capitals have scored at least 3 in 4 of their last 5.
