TLDR: The Edmonton Oilers have given up 13 goals in 2 games and are already short a top-line winger and their second-line center. The Seattle Kraken walk into Rogers Place on Saturday, October 3, after an opener where almost everything went their way.

Seattle visits Edmonton after a 6-1 opening win in Calgary that was spread across the whole lineup, led by Dunn, McCann, Beniers and Kakko, with Daccord nearly perfect in net. The Oilers split a 2-game home-and-home with Vancouver that produced 27 total goals. They come into this one without Hyman, Nugent-Hopkins and 3 other centers, and with Andersen out until maybe December. Edmonton's scoring against Seattle's structure decides this one, and no prices are posted yet.

Seattle Kraken
  • Rolled Calgary 6-1, scoring spread across the lineup
  • Daccord stopped 24 of 25 in the opener
  • Power play scored early against the Flames
  • 1 game against Calgary is a small sample
  • Samoskevich and O'Brien both on IR
Edmonton Oilers
  • Scored 14 goals in 2 games against Vancouver
  • Bounced back from the OT loss with a road win
  • Allowed 13 goals in the first 2 games
  • Hyman and Nugent-Hopkins both out of the top 6
  • Andersen out until maybe December

Start with Edmonton's lineup, because that is where this game's questions are. Zach Hyman got hurt in the final preseason game against Calgary, played 20:33 in the season-opening overtime loss to Vancouver anyway, and then sat out the rematch. Mike Babcock, in his first season behind the Oilers bench, called him day to day and then said that probably means 2 weeks. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins went on injured reserve with a lower-body injury from a Monday practice. Babcock has called that a short-term absence but hasn't given a timeline.

That leaves a thin middle of the lineup. Matt Savoie is on long-term IR, Jason Dickinson is still a bit away by Babcock's own account, and Mattias Janmark has no return timetable. That is 4 centers out on Edmonton's report. Behind them, Frederik Andersen's knee injury has him out until maybe December. Edmonton hasn't confirmed who starts in goal, and nobody should guess for them.

The Oilers' first week has been wild either way. They lost 6-5 in overtime at home to the Canucks, then went to Vancouver and won 9-7. That's 14 goals scored and 13 allowed in 2 nights against the same opponent. Even shorthanded, this team can score. It just hasn't shown it can stop anyone yet.

Seattle's opener was the opposite: controlled and one-sided. The Kraken beat Calgary 6-1 at the Saddledome and were up 3-0 after the first period. Jordan Eberle scored on the power play, and Vince Dunn scored 32 seconds later. Dunn finished with a goal and 2 assists, Jared McCann had 3 assists, and Matty Beniers and Kaapo Kakko each had a goal and an assist. Joey Daccord stopped 24 of 25. One game against Calgary doesn't prove much, but it's hard to start a season better than that.

Seattle has injuries too, just far fewer. Jake O'Brien is on non-roster IR with a lower-body injury, and Mackie Samoskevich is also on IR. Neither is a big loss next to Edmonton's list.

So the question for Saturday is simple. Can the Oilers' scoring keep covering for a beaten-up lineup and a goaltending situation without its starter, against a Kraken team that just held Calgary to 1 goal? Puck drop is 5:00 PM MT. The board hasn't posted a full set of prices yet, so for now this is a matchup worth watching, not a bet.
