TLDR: Seattle has scored in bunches on its eastern swing, and Florida keeps winning with half its Cup core in street clothes. Saturday in Sunrise will show which of those holds up.

Seattle (5-2-1) arrives after a scoring-heavy eastern road swing that ended with an overtime loss in Tampa, and Florida (4-2-2) has won 2 straight without Barkov, Marchand, Gudas or Markstrom. Markstrom's status in goal and Brandon Montour's day-to-day tag on Seattle's already thin blue line are the open questions. Both teams have shown they can come back late.

Seattle Kraken
  • Scored 5+ goals in 2 of last 4 road games
  • Erased 2 third-period leads in Tampa
  • Grubauer sharp in the Philly shootout win
  • Lindgren out 4-6 weeks, Montour day-to-day
  • 5th straight road game of the swing
  • Gave up 6 at home to Vegas
Florida Panthers
  • Won 2 straight, 10 goals across them
  • Rallied from 2-0 down against Vancouver
  • Hung 7 on Columbus on a back-to-back

The Kraken drop into Amerant Bank Arena for a 6:00 PM ET puck drop on Saturday, October 17, at 5-2-1. That is a better start than most people outside Seattle expected. Their swing through the East has been loud: 6 on Detroit, 5 on Washington, then a 3-2 win in Philadelphia that Bobby McMann ended in the 5th round of the shootout. Philipp Grubauer stopped 24 shots through overtime that night and 4 of 5 in the skills competition. Florida is the 5th straight road stop on the run.

The Panthers' story is who isn't there. Aleksander Barkov is out roughly 6-8 weeks with a lower-body injury, Brad Marchand is on IR, Radko Gudas is out, and Jacob Markstrom missed Thursday's game against Vancouver with an undisclosed injury. Markstrom is the goalie Florida traded for in July to take over from Sergei Bobrovsky, who left for Toronto. Whether he's back for Saturday is the biggest open question on the Florida side, and nobody has put a timeline on it.

Still, the shorthanded version keeps finding a way. Vancouver led 2-0 after 2 periods on Thursday and never scored again, and Florida tied it with 2 in the 3rd before winning 3-2 after regulation. That was the Panthers' 2nd straight win. The game before was a 7-3 thumping of Columbus on the back half of a back-to-back, a day after a 5-3 loss in Buffalo.

Seattle has also shown it won't fold late. In Tampa, the Kraken trailed twice in the 3rd period and answered both times through Jared McCann and Matty Beniers. They forced overtime before Victor Hedman ended it 2:07 in. They put 27 shots on Andrei Vasilevskiy and got 3 past him, which is a real night's work against that goalie. The team that gave up 6 at home to Vegas in early October has looked much tighter on the road since.

The Kraken's blue line is the thing to watch. Ryan Lindgren is out 4-6 weeks with an upper-body injury, and Brandon Montour came out of the Tampa game listed day-to-day. Losing both would leave Seattle without 2 of its regular defensemen against a Florida team that just scored 10 goals in 2 games before the Vancouver comeback. Florida has injury questions of its own, especially in goal, so these are 2 depleted rosters, and the deeper bench will probably decide it.
