TLDR: Two of the cleanest starts in the league meet at T-Mobile Arena on Tuesday, October 20. Tampa Bay has the stars and a new goalie getting results, and Vegas has Jack Eichel playing like an early Hart candidate.

Tampa Bay brings a 6-2-0 start built on Nikita Kucherov's production and comeback wins to Las Vegas, with Tampa yet to say whether Dennis Hildeby or Andrei Vasilevskiy starts in net. Vegas came into the week first in the Pacific, with Jack Eichel among the league's top scorers and a heavy, shot-hungry style. The game likely turns on whether the Golden Knights' forecheck and zone time pin Tampa down, or whether the Lightning's top line punishes them in transition.

Tampa Bay Lightning
  • Kucherov scored twice in under 5 minutes against Vancouver
  • Hildeby has been steady since arriving from Toronto
  • Guentzel and Kucherov finish in bunches
  • Keeps falling behind early, needed a 2-goal comeback
  • Gourde (hip) out, thinning the bottom 6
  • Starting goalie for this game not announced
Vegas Golden Knights
  • Eichel's 13 points tied for 3rd in the NHL
  • 5th in shots per game, 2nd in zone time
  • Hill had won 3 straight starts by midweek
  • Midweek form; Calgary and Pittsburgh games since
  • Physical style can mean penalties against Kucherov's power play

Tampa Bay's start has been all Nikita Kucherov. He led the team with 7 assists through the first 2 weeks, then scored twice in under 5 minutes against Vancouver to wipe out a 2-0 deficit before Jake Guentzel won it in the 3rd. As of Sunday the Lightning are 6-2-0 and have won 2 straight, and Bolts Breakdown calls it the club's best start since 2018-19. They also keep doing it the hard way. Our own recap of the 4-2 win over the Canucks was titled "Erase Another Canucks Lead" for a reason.

The other storyline in Tampa is the crease. Dennis Hildeby came over from Toronto in a July 1 trade, made 34 saves in his Lightning debut in the 3-2 win over Minnesota, and was in net against Vancouver, when the Canucks managed only 14 shots. Andrei Vasilevskiy is still the franchise goalie, and Tampa hasn't said who starts in Vegas. Whoever it is will be facing a lot more pucks than Vancouver threw at Hildeby.

Vegas came into the week 6-2-0 and first in the Pacific. Eichel had 13 points (4 goals, 9 assists), tied for 3rd in the league, and the Golden Knights were 5th in the NHL at 30.8 shots per game. Mark Stone (8 points), Tomas Hertl (3 power-play goals) and Mitch Marner give them real depth behind Eichel, and Adin Hill had won 3 straight after a 25-save night in the 5-2 win over Nashville. Calgary and Pittsburgh have both been through T-Mobile Arena since then, so the Vegas numbers above are a snapshot from midweek.

The style matchup is the reason to tune in. Vegas leans on territory. The Golden Knights ranked 2nd in even-strength offensive-zone time, and Jeremy Lauzon led every NHL defenseman with 28 hits. That's a heavy, grinding look for a Tampa team whose best nights this season have come from finishing chances when they get them, not from controlling the puck. If Vegas wins the forecheck, the Lightning goalie spends the night under siege. If Kucherov and Guentzel get loose in transition, Tampa has shown it can score 3 or 4 in a hurry.

Tampa is still without Yanni Gourde, who is on the injured non-roster list with a hip injury, so the bottom-6 minutes against the Vegas checkers fall to the depth guys. Watch the Vegas power play too. Hertl's 3 power-play goals mean Tampa can't afford to spend a 2nd straight game chasing the play and taking penalties. Puck drop is 7:30 PM PT.
