TLDR: Both clubs won their openers, and neither result was close to dull. Utah blanked Chicago, and Matthew Knies started his Columbus career by taking over the building, so Saturday's game at Nationwide Arena is the first real test for either team.

Utah and Columbus both won their openers: the Mammoth shut out Chicago 6-0 behind 2 power-play goals from Dylan Guenther, and Matthew Knies had 3 points in his Blue Jackets debut against Buffalo. The game probably comes down to Utah's power play against a Columbus blue line that just lost Ivan Provorov to injured reserve, with the Mammoth on a quick trip east and both clubs short a defenseman. No odds are posted yet.

Utah Mammoth
  • Guenther scored 2 power-play goals in the opener
  • Held Chicago to 9 shots through 2 periods
  • Scoring came from 6 different players against Chicago
  • Lamoureux on IR, so the blue line is short
  • Trip from Salt Lake to Columbus with 1 day of rest
  • Vejmelka barely tested; only 15 saves in the opener
Columbus Blue Jackets
  • Knies had 2 goals and an assist in his debut
  • Home ice after an opening win over Buffalo
  • Added depth up front: Coyle, Nichushkin, Knies

Utah's opener was as one-sided as a 6-0 score sounds. Dylan Guenther scored twice on the power play, Karel Vejmelka needed only 15 saves for the shutout, and Chicago got just 9 shots on goal through 2 periods. Michael Carcone, Nick Schmaltz, Anders Lee and Daniil But also scored, so the goals came from all over the lineup. It's 1 game against a Blackhawks team that had already lost to Vegas, but it showed what this Mammoth group looks like when its special teams are working.

Columbus has a lot of new faces. After a busy offseason, Don Waddell traded for Matthew Knies and signed him to a 5-year deal, added Charlie Coyle on a 6-year contract and brought in Valeri Nichushkin. Knies paid off right away, with 2 goals and an assist in the opening win over Buffalo. Adam Fantilli, newly extended through 2031-32, is still the centre the whole thing is built around. Neither side has a priced board yet, so this one is about hockey for now.

The Blue Jackets' defense is the bigger question. Ivan Provorov went on injured reserve on October 1, which leaves a blue line led by Zach Werenski with Denton Mateychuk, Emil Andrae, Erik Gudbranson and Jake Christiansen behind him. That's a lot of minutes for a young, thin group. Utah's power play just put 2 past Chicago, so how Columbus handles the penalty kill could decide this game.

Utah has its own hole on the back end. Maveric Lamoureux is on injured reserve, so the Mammoth are also playing without a regular defenseman. They also make the trip from Salt Lake City to Columbus with only 1 day in between, and that's a real body-clock spot for a team that's at home for its opener and on the road for game 2.

In goal, Columbus starts the season without Elvis Merzlikins after his offseason shoulder surgery, so the crease belongs to Cam Talbot and Jet Greaves. Neither team has named a starter for Saturday. Vejmelka's night against Chicago asked very little of him, and Columbus's revamped forward group will test him far more than a team that managed 9 shots in 40 minutes.

Puck drop is 7:00 PM ET on Saturday, October 3. Utah's power play against a Columbus defense missing Provorov is the matchup to watch. Knies against a Mammoth team that just showed what its 5-on-5 game can do is the other. It's an early-season game between 2 clubs that expect to play in the spring, and both are 1 game into finding out whether that's true.
