TLDR: Utah closes its swing through the East with a Tuesday stop in Toronto, and the Mammoth have spent 7 straight games trading wins and losses. Their banged-up defense has to find some way to stop that.

Utah visits Toronto to finish an Eastern road swing, coming off a 6-3 loss in Philadelphia that exposed a defense missing John Marino and Maveric Lamoureux, with Kailer Yamamoto also out. The Mammoth have alternated wins and losses for 7 straight games, and their offense runs through Nick Schmaltz and Logan Cooley. Toronto, also missing regulars, won 4-2 in Vancouver on the strength of a 2-0 middle period.

Utah Mammoth
  • Schmaltz and Cooley shared team lead with 7 goals
  • Schmaltz's 5 power-play goals threaten a thin Leafs lineup
  • 9-6-0 overall, still on the right side of .500
  • Marino and Lamoureux both on IR, defense stretched
  • Yamamoto ruled out November 1
  • Gave up 6 in Philadelphia, 2nd period broke them
Toronto Maple Leafs
  • Won 4-2 at Vancouver despite missing several regulars
  • Took over that game with a 2-0 2nd period

Puck drops at 7:00 PM ET on Tuesday, November 3, at Scotiabank Arena. Utah gets there on the back of a 6-3 beating in Philadelphia, where 6 different Flyers scored and Travis Konecny marked his return from IR with a goal. The game got away from Utah in the 2nd period, when the Flyers scored twice to go up 3-1. The Mammoth's 2 goals in the 3rd made the score look better without ever making it close.

The real problem in Philly was the back end, and it won't be fixed by Tuesday. John Marino and Maveric Lamoureux are both on injured reserve, so Utah is playing without 2 regular defensemen. Up front, Kailer Yamamoto was ruled out on November 1. That's a 3rd body to replace on a road trip, and the Mammoth play 15 games this month, 9 of them away from home. The board for this one hasn't posted yet.

Toronto has its own missing pieces. Our recap of the Leafs' last game described a lineup without several regulars, and they still beat the Canucks 4-2 at Rogers Arena. After a 1-1 1st period, Toronto won the 2nd 2-0 and kept Vancouver to 2 goals. Winning on the road with a patched-up roster says something about the structure, even if the Canucks at 3-12-1 aren't much of a measuring stick.

Utah can score. Nick Schmaltz and Logan Cooley shared the team lead with 7 goals apiece heading into the Philadelphia game, and 5 of Schmaltz's came on the power play. That gives a Toronto team short on bodies a reason to stay out of the box. The flip side is the alternating results. Going 2-3 over the last 5 hasn't been a slump so much as a team that can't string 2 good nights together.

The matchup is easy enough to see. Utah's forwards, led by Cooley and Schmaltz on the power play, against a Leafs team that just showed it can defend without its full lineup. If the Mammoth's short-handed defense gives up another big 2nd period the way it did in Philadelphia, the road trip ends the same way it did there. If Utah's top 6 controls the puck and keeps it away from its own patchwork pairs, 9-6-0 Utah is good enough to steal 2 points in Toronto.
