TLDR: Edmonton has given up 1 goal in its last 3 games, and the last stop of its trip through the New York area is the toughest one. New Jersey is 4-1 in its last 5, has Connor Hellebuyck in net and gets to wait at home while the Oilers come in on the road.

Edmonton has won 3 straight while allowing 1 goal, with Tristan Jarry posting 2 shutouts and Matt Tomkins handling the back half of the back-to-back. The Oilers end their New York-area trip in Newark against a Devils team that is 4-1 in its last 5, has Connor Hellebuyck unbeaten in net and gets 3 days of rest at home. Who plays goal for Edmonton, and whether Anthony Mantha is ready for New Jersey, are the open questions.

Edmonton Oilers
  • 1 goal allowed over the last 3 games
  • Jarry with back-to-back shutouts
  • Tomkins stopped 28 of 29 in an emergency start
  • Hyman on IR, Howard out with a knee injury
  • Andersen and Levi both out, thin behind Jarry
  • Playing on the road off a game 2 days earlier
New Jersey Devils
  • Hellebuyck still unbeaten this season
  • Scored 5 goals in 3 of the last 5
  • 3 days of rest at home before puck drop
  • Mantha day-to-day, no update yet
  • Casey out 6-8 weeks after knee procedure
  • Gave up 5 in Colorado, their only recent loss

Tuesday, November 3, at Prudential Center, puck drop at 7:30 PM ET. The Oilers are 11-2-2 and have won 3 straight: 4-0 over Calgary, 4-0 over the Islanders and 4-1 at Madison Square Garden. That run started right after back-to-back home losses to Toronto and Detroit, including a 7-2 beating by the Leafs that had people in Edmonton asking questions. Mike Babcock's group answered by choking games down to almost nothing. The scorers have been fine. The goals-against column is the story.

Most of that is Tristan Jarry. He posted back-to-back shutouts, finishing with 18 saves on 18 shots against the Islanders, and then got the next night off. Matt Tomkins played in his place at the Garden. It was his first NHL game since April 17, 2024, and he stopped 28 of 29. That matters because Edmonton is short on goalies: Frederik Andersen (knee) might not be back until December, and Devon Levi is expected to miss a few weeks. Up front, Zach Hyman is on IR and Isaac Howard (knee) sat out the Rangers game. That's 2 left wings gone from a team whose attack is already built around a few players.

New Jersey comes in fresher and looks a lot like the team that's been pounding the Western Conference. The Devils went 5-1 in Dallas and 5-2 in Vegas on their trip, losing only a 5-2 game in Colorado in between. Hellebuyck stayed unbeaten in the Vegas win, and Arseny Gritsyuk scored 2 goals. Edmonton played Sunday. The Devils haven't played since that Friday in Vegas, so they get 3 full days at home to rest before Tuesday.

The question for the Devils is Anthony Mantha. He left the Vegas game with an undisclosed injury, and Sheldon Keefe had no update afterward beyond saying the winger would be evaluated back in New Jersey. He's listed day-to-day. The long break helps him more than anyone, but until he skates there's a hole on the right side. Seamus Casey is still out after his knee procedure, so the blue line is the same one that held Dallas and Vegas to 1 goal and 2.

This one should be decided in the crease. Jarry has been close to perfect for a week. If Babcock rides him again, Edmonton has its best goalie going against a Devils team that has scored 5 goals in 3 of its last 5 games. Hellebuyck hasn't lost yet this season. For New Jersey, that means the Oilers' recent run of keeping the other team off the board will be tested in the one building on this trip where they're up against a goalie playing at least as well as their own.

Both teams are winning with goaltending and defense, so goals should be hard to come by. Edmonton has the better record and more rest questions. New Jersey has the schedule edge and the goalie nobody has beaten yet this season. It should be a good watch on a Tuesday in November.
