TLDR: Edmonton has spent the last 2 weeks finding new ways to lose bodies, and on Saturday the Oilers bring whatever is left of their roster to Elmont. The Islanders get 1 more game in before they get them.

Edmonton comes to Elmont with a 9-2-2 record, its 2 top goalies hurt and Zach Hyman on IR with a neck injury, so Tristan Jarry is carrying the crease. The Islanders are missing Mathew Barzal and Calum Ritchie and play at Minnesota first, and that result will shape their form and goalie choice for Saturday. Both teams have been blowing leads lately, so the third period is where this game is likely to be decided.

Edmonton Oilers
  • Jarry blanked Calgary on 23 shots in the latest start
  • Scoring depth: Formenton, Kapanen chipping in goals
  • 2 days' rest before the Saturday matinee
  • Andersen and Levi both hurt; no goalie depth behind Jarry
  • Hyman out at least a week with neck injury
  • Blew 3 separate leads in the Detroit loss
New York Islanders
  • Schenn holding up at center, just scored his 300th
  • Varlamov's Nashville win gives a usable second goalie
  • Home ice after a road set
  • Barzal and Ritchie both out of the middle
  • Blew a 3-goal lead in Nashville
  • Plays at Minnesota first, schedule could tax the crease

There's no pitcher card on a hockey page, so let's start with the obvious: the Oilers are 9-2-2 and they have been winning a lot of strange games. As of Wednesday they had beaten Minnesota 4-3 and Carolina 6-5, been blown out 7-2 by Toronto, and lost to Detroit after blowing 3 separate leads. Then Tristan Jarry, who struggled against the Red Wings, stopped all 23 Calgary shots in a 4-0 shutout that ended the Flames' 4-game win streak. Alex Formenton and Kasperi Kapanen scored in the 3rd to put that one away.

The goalie situation is the part to watch. Frederik Andersen (knee) isn't expected back until "maybe" December, according to Mike Babcock, and Devon Levi is out a few weeks with an undisclosed injury. That leaves Jarry, so the Calgary shutout counts for more than 1 night's work. The Oilers are also without Zach Hyman again. He went on injured reserve with a neck injury after Andreas Englund hit him into the boards in the Detroit game, and Jason Gregor reports he'll be out at least a week. It's the second time this season Hyman has been hurt.

The Islanders have to play at Minnesota before this one, and that game should tell us a lot about Saturday. New York was 6-4-2 after a 4-3 shootout win in Nashville on Tuesday. Semyon Varlamov made 20 saves there for his first NHL win since November 2024, but the Islanders needed the shootout after blowing a 3-goal lead. How the Wild game goes, and who plays goal in it, decides which Islanders team Edmonton sees at 2:00 PM ET.

Edmonton's last 5 games were all at Rogers Place, so this is the first road trip in a while for a team that has blown leads at home. Losing leads at home is a habit. Losing them in somebody else's building is how a hot start ends. The Oilers do have 2 days off after the Calgary game before puck drop, so this isn't a tired-legs spot. It's mostly a question of whether the defensive lapses from the Detroit game come along on the flight.

New York is short-handed up front too. Mathew Barzal (knee) is out, and Calum Ritchie (lower body) is on injured reserve for about 4-6 weeks. That has pushed Brayden Schenn to center, and he's handled it well enough to score his 300th NHL goal in Nashville. Anthony Duclair and Bo Horvat also scored in that game. Both teams have injured lineups and both have given away big leads this month, so neither one looks great on paper and nobody is running away with this one.
