TLDR: The reigning Stanley Cup champions get another preseason look at the Florida Panthers, and both benches are shorter than their fans would like. Brad Marchand is rehabbing, Alexander Nikishin is unsigned, and Brady Tkachuk is still waiting to show Raleigh what the June trade bought.
This is the Panthers' 2nd trip into the Hurricanes' orbit this month. The two clubs opened the preseason against each other, starting with Florida's exhibition opener at Amerant Bank Arena on September 20. By Tuesday, September 29, the novelty is gone and this becomes a roster audit. Carolina opened camp with most of the group that won the Cup. Florida opened camp with a new Tkachuk on the ice.
Brady Tkachuk's first camp as a Panther is the story on the Florida side, and right now it's on hold. Florida got him from Ottawa in a June blockbuster, but he's listed out with an undisclosed issue that the team calls day-to-day. Marchand is out for longer. Paul Maurice has him rehabbing through October, and Jonah Gadjovich is out indefinitely with an upper-body injury. Florida's 4-game preseason is shorter than usual, and the veterans have been told to go hard early. That makes Florida's lineup card worth watching more than the price.
Carolina has its own holes. Nikishin skipped camp without a contract, and his side is reportedly asking for more than $8 million a year after his first full NHL season. Seth Jarvis came back from offseason shoulder surgery skating in a yellow no-contact sweater. The Canes are defending a title with a top-4 defenseman stuck in negotiations and a top-6 forward still being handled carefully.
Ignore the last-5 records here. Florida's are April regular-season games, and Carolina's are the Final against Vegas. Neither says much about a late-September exhibition. What matters is how much of each real roster actually dresses. Florida has had a compressed camp to work in Tkachuk. Carolina has been handing ice time around in 2 camp groups while it waits on Nikishin and eases Jarvis back.
Puck drop is 5:00 PM ET at Lenovo Center. If Brady Tkachuk plays, it's the first time the Tkachuk brothers dress together in Raleigh, and after the Panthers' recent playoff history against Carolina, that alone is worth a look. If he doesn't, this is two good teams checking who's ready for October.
