This is San Jose's season opener and Florida's second game of the year, and that gap is the whole setup. The Panthers ground out a 1-0 win at Carolina to start their year, which is about as Panthers as a result gets: nothing given away, 1 goal, go home. The Sharks haven't played a game that counts yet. They get the ceremony, the new captain and a crowd that has been waiting 7 seasons for a team worth waiting for.

That captain is Macklin Celebrini. He's 20, the youngest in franchise history and the youngest active captain in the league. That's 6 bodies, but it's depth: Celebrini, Will Smith and Tyler Toffoli were all in camp from day 1. Florida is the road favorite, and that makes sense for a club with a win already in its pocket against one that's still a projection.

The schedule spot is the part worth watching. Florida played in Raleigh on September 29 and drops the puck in San Jose 2 days later, a trip across 3 time zones with a morning skate somewhere in between. Veteran clubs handle that fine in March. In week 1, against a young team riding its opening-night crowd, the first period could be loud and messy.
