TLDR: Seattle put 6 on Detroit back on October 9. On Tuesday, October 20, the Red Wings get a second shot at a Kraken team that got home from a 5-game road trip short 2 regular defensemen and coming off an 8-goal beating in Sunrise.

Detroit visits Seattle 11 days after the Kraken won 6-3 in Detroit. Seattle is home from a 5-game road trip that ended with 2 losses, and it is without defensemen Brandon Montour and Ryan Lindgren after giving up 8 goals in Florida. Detroit is still short several regulars but has Dylan Larkin back and came from behind to beat San Jose. The game likely turns on how a patched-up Kraken blue line handles the Red Wings' forwards.

Detroit Red Wings
  • Rallied with 2 3rd-period goals to beat San Jose
  • Larkin back after missing first 2 games
  • Seattle missing its 2 top-pair-caliber defensemen
  • Still missing 4 regulars, Kasper status unclear
  • Allowed 6 to Seattle in October 9 meeting
  • Edvinsson holdout leaves the blue line thin
Seattle Kraken
  • Already beat Detroit 6-3 this month
  • Home after a 5-game road trip, 2 days' rest
  • Scored 3+ in each of the last 5

There is no doubt about where this game gets decided: the Seattle blue line. Brandon Montour left the overtime loss in Tampa with a lower-body injury, and he is listed out. Ryan Lindgren is on injured reserve with an upper-body injury and is expected to miss 4 to 6 weeks. Without both of them, Florida put 38 shots on Joey Daccord and he let in all 8. Seattle has to rebuild its defensive pairings on the fly, and nobody has said yet who soaks up the minutes those 2 played.

Detroit has its own holes. Our recap of the 4-3 shootout win over San Jose had the Red Wings still missing 4 regulars. Marco Kasper is on injured reserve with an upper-body injury and has a projected return date of October 20, the day of this game, so check his status closer to puck drop. Mason Appleton is on IR, week-to-week. Simon Edvinsson is still holding out for a new contract as a restricted free agent. The good news for Detroit is Dylan Larkin, who missed the first 2 games of the season and is now back in the lineup.

What Detroit has shown lately is that it keeps coming. The Red Wings were behind going into the 3rd period against the Sharks, scored twice to tie it and won in the shootout. They will need that kind of push again, because they gave up 3 goals in that game and allowed 6 the last time they saw the Kraken.

Seattle's form, as of now, is better than its last 2 results. The Kraken won 3 straight on the road, including that 6-3 game in Detroit, before the trip went bad: Victor Hedman won it in Tampa with 2:53 left in overtime, and then the Panthers ran them over. Jared McCann and Ryan Winterton scored in the Tampa game. Coming home after 5 straight road games should help. So should the 2 days off before this one, which give the coaching staff a chance to sort out the defense.

Expect goals. Seattle's last 5 games went 9, 8, 5, 7 and 11 total goals, and the defense that gave up those numbers is now thinner. Detroit just traded 3-goal periods with San Jose. Puck drop is 6:40 PM PT at Climate Pledge Arena. The story to watch is Detroit's forwards against whoever Seattle sends out on the back end, and whether Daccord bounces back from the worst night of his season.
