TLDR: Buffalo keeps losing by 1 goal and Anaheim just gave back a 3-goal lead at home. On Thursday at Honda Center, something has to give.

Buffalo and Anaheim have both gone 1-4 in their last 5. The Sabres keep losing 1-goal games on a thin, injury-hit roster, and the Ducks just blew a 4-1 third-period lead to Vancouver at home. Expect this one to come down to Anaheim's depleted defense against a Sabres team still trying to finish games without Kulich and with Luukkonen carrying the net.

Buffalo Sabres
  • 3 of last 5 losses by a single goal
  • Power (9 pts) steady from the back end
  • Ducks' thin D gives up chances in bunches
  • Kulich in concussion protocol, Ostlund carrying more of the load
  • Lyon out, Luukkonen making nearly every start
  • Second-period breakdowns cost them in Washington
Anaheim Ducks
  • Scored 5 in each of last 2 games
  • Greer, Sennecke, Carlsson all scored vs Vancouver
  • Home after a 4-game Eastern road trip
  • Blew 4-1 third-period lead to Vancouver
  • Mintyukov and Moore out; blue line short-handed
  • Poehling and Terry out up front

There's no MLB-style pitching duel to set up here, so start with the clubs. Thursday, October 29 sends the Buffalo Sabres into Honda Center on a California swing that already took them through San Jose. The Anaheim Ducks are back home after a 4-game road trip through the East. Both teams have gone 1-4 in their last 5, and both have been unlucky in pretty much the same way: close games, late collapses, and very little to show for it.

Buffalo's record is mostly 1-goal losses. Of the Sabres' last 5, 3 were 4-3 losses to Montreal twice and Washington, and the Capitals game went to overtime after second-period breakdowns and 2 Alex Tuch goals. The roster is beat up. Jiri Kulich is in concussion protocol and hadn't joined the trip as of Tuesday, so younger forwards like Noah Ostlund (8 points) are carrying more of the scoring. Alex Lyon had a setback with no timeline, which has left Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen making almost every start in net. The board for this one hasn't posted yet.

Anaheim's latest loss hurt even more. The Ducks led Vancouver 4-1 going into the 3rd period, gave up 4 goals in that period, and lost 6-5 when Filip Hronek scored 4:49 into overtime. That ended a Canucks skid dating back to October 3. Greer, Sennecke and Carlsson all scored, so the offense showed up. A short-handed blue line couldn't hold the lead.

That blue line is the story in Anaheim. Pavel Mintyukov went on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, and Joel Quenneville says Ian Moore is still "a ways from skating." The Ducks are also without Ryan Poehling, who is out 6-8 weeks with an MCL sprain, and Troy Terry, who is on long-term IR with a hip injury. Quenneville's read on the road trip was that the Rangers game was the only one where they looked behind the whole night and that they "fought back in the other games." Fair enough, but fighting back doesn't help much when you can't close.

Buffalo's list is longer: Danforth, Carrick, Grzelcyk, Timmins and Rathbone are all out on top of Kulich and Lyon. Owen Power has 9 points from the back end and has given the Sabres a steady presence, but the Washington loss looked like the rest of their season. They were in the game and gave it away in one bad stretch. Anaheim is giving up goals in bunches, so the Sabres will get chances to score. What matters is whether they can stay organized for all 60 minutes, which they haven't managed lately.

Puck drop is 7:00 PM PT. One team has been losing coin-flip games and the other has been losing games it was winning. A lot of their recent games have gone late, so don't be surprised if this one does too.
