TLDR: Buffalo finishes its California swing with a Halloween matinee at crypto.com Arena against a Kings team that just turned a 4-goal lead into an overtime coin flip. Neither club is playing tidy hockey right now, which makes this one more fun to watch than it is to predict.

Buffalo finishes a California road trip in Los Angeles, coming off a shutout in San Jose and a 7-6 win in Anaheim led by Tage Thompson's hat trick. The Kings got a 6-5 overtime win over Ottawa after blowing a 4-goal lead, and they are still missing Kevin Fiala and Mats Zuccarello, with Drew Doughty day-to-day. Both teams have thin, injured defenses, so it may come down to whose depth holds up late, not whose top line scores more.

Buffalo Sabres
  • Thompson had a hat trick and 5 points in Anaheim
  • Shut out San Jose before the Anaheim win
  • Came back from 2 down with 6 straight goals
  • Kulich in concussion protocol, Helenius out at center
  • Grzelcyk, Timmins, Rathbone all on IR on defense
  • Gave up 3 in the 3rd at Anaheim
Los Angeles Kings
  • Scored 4 in a period against Ottawa
  • Got the first home win after going 0-3 at home
  • First game of the season against Buffalo
  • Blew a 5-1 lead in the 3rd vs Ottawa
  • Fiala and Zuccarello out, Doughty day-to-day
  • 28 goals for, 37 against before Ottawa

The Sabres show up having won 2 straight. They shut out San Jose 2-0 and then won a 7-6 track meet in Anaheim, where Tage Thompson scored 3 goals and had 5 points. That was his 10th career hat trick, which ties him with Alexander Mogilny and Danny Gare for the 3rd-most in franchise history. Zach Benson added a goal and 2 assists. Before those 2 wins, Buffalo had dropped 3 straight, so the 6-4-3 record says this team is streaky more than it says this team is good.

The Anaheim win is worth a closer look. Buffalo fell behind on 2 early Ducks power-play goals, scored 6 in a row, and then gave up 3 in the 3rd period and barely hung on. A lot of that was Anaheim's thin blue line, but the Sabres' own back end is thin too. Matt Grzelcyk, Conor Timmins and Jack Rathbone are all on injured reserve, and Alex Lyon had a setback and has no timeline to return. When the defense holds, like it did in San Jose, Buffalo can win low-scoring games. When it doesn't, the Sabres need Thompson to score 3.

The Kings had their own bad 3rd period. Against Ottawa they scored 4 times in the 2nd to go up 5-1, then gave up 4 straight goals before winning 6-5 in overtime. That was their first game back from a 5-game road trip. ABC7's preview had LA at 3-6-2 going into that game, with 28 goals for and 37 against, and without a win in 3 home games. Getting 2 points was a relief. Blowing a 4-goal lead at home to a team with goalie problems was not.

Injuries are the big story for LA. As of the Ottawa preview, Kevin Fiala (leg), Mats Zuccarello (upper body), Jakub Dvorak (upper body), Jan Jenik and Alex Turcotte were out, and Drew Doughty and Corey Perry were day-to-day. Losing Fiala and Zuccarello takes 2 top-6 scorers out of the lineup. Doughty's status matters most on defense. If he can't go, the same blue line that just gave up 4 in a period has to deal with Thompson.

Buffalo is short down the middle. Jiri Kulich is in concussion protocol and Konsta Helenius is listed out, which leaves the Sabres thin at center and puts more of the load on Thompson's line. Justin Danforth went on IR with an upper-body injury, too. Both teams played Thursday night, so neither side has a rest advantage going into the 1:00 PM PT start.

This is the first meeting of the season. Both teams have had trouble protecting leads, and both are missing a lot of players. Buffalo has the hotter top line. LA has home ice and badly needs a cleaner 60 minutes. Neither defense has played well enough lately to make a low-scoring game the safe expectation.
