TLDR: Ottawa was 1 of the best defensive stories in hockey for 2 weeks, and then Linus Ullmark got helped off the ice. On Thursday, October 29, the Senators drag that problem into Los Angeles to face a Kings team that has finally started to look like itself.

Ottawa (8-5-0) arrives in Los Angeles without Linus Ullmark, who led the league in wins and save percentage before a lower-body injury, and the Senators have allowed 14 goals in the 3 games since. The Kings dug out of an 0-4-2 start with a 3-2-0 road trip and open a homestand after a day of rest. Thomas Chabot's possible return and how Ottawa's backup goaltending holds up against an LA blue line that has started scoring will likely decide it.

Ottawa Senators
  • Chabot full practice, nearing return to blue line
  • Scored 7 on the Rangers since Ullmark went down
  • Beat Florida 5-1 when the crease was right
  • Ullmark out; 14 goals allowed in 3 games since
  • 1 goal on 19 shots in Vegas loss
  • Eklund out 10-12 weeks after ankle surgery
Los Angeles Kings
  • Went 3-2-0 on the 5-game road trip
  • Defensemen scoring: Doughty, Anderson, Edmundson, Clarke in NYC
  • Day of rest and first home game since trip
  • Dug a hole with an 0-4-2 start
  • Managed 1 goal in Chicago loss
  • Long road trip can mean a flat first game home

The Senators are 8-5-0 and that record lies a little. Before Ullmark went down in the 5-1 win over Florida, he led the NHL in wins (7) and save percentage (.945), so nearly every win this team had went through his crease. Since then it's been a 6-2 home loss to San Jose, a 7-4 shootout-style win over the Rangers, and a 4-1 loss in Vegas where Ottawa managed 1 goal on 19 shots. Over 3 games that's 14 goals against. The team in front of the goalie didn't change. The goalie did.

Help is on the way, but it isn't here yet. Ullmark's lower-body injury was pegged at 1-2 weeks on October 22, so Thursday sits right at the early end of that window. Samuel Ersson has been holding the job. On defense, Thomas Chabot was a full participant in practice in Vegas and is described as nearing a return from his upper-body injury, which would put the captain back on the top pair. William Eklund is gone for months after ankle tendon surgery, so the forward group stays a man short whatever happens with Chabot.

The Kings are a different kind of story. They opened 0-4-2, then went 3-2-0 on a 5-game road trip that ended with a 2-1 loss in Chicago on the 2nd night of a back-to-back. LA scored in the 1st period at the United Center and had nothing in the legs after that. Thursday is the first game back at crypto.com Arena, with puck drop at 7:00 PM PT and a full day off in between.

The game that says the most about what LA can do came 1 night before Chicago: a 6-3 win at Madison Square Garden. Drew Doughty had a goal and 2 assists, Artemi Panarin scored his team-leading 7th, and 6 different Kings scored, with Mikey Anderson, Joel Edmundson and Brandt Clarke all getting on the board from the back end. Darcy Kuemper made 23 saves. Doughty's line afterward was about not deflating after giving one up, which is a fair summary of a club that spent the first 2 weeks of the season deflating.

That's where this game gets interesting. LA's defensemen have started shooting and scoring, and Ottawa's crease is at its weakest point of the year. The Senators showed they can still put up 7 on a bad night for the other goalie, but they've also gone quiet in 2 of their last 3, and they're playing 2 games in 3 days through Vegas and LA. If Chabot is back and steadies the breakout, Ottawa can win a tight game. If he isn't, and the Kings get the same volume from the blue line they got in New York, Ersson faces another long night.
