Ottawa Senators at Detroit Red Wings

TLDR: Detroit hosts Ottawa on Tuesday, October 6, and Little Caesars Arena has turned into one of the stranger buildings in the league. The Red Wings' best center wants out, their 2nd-line center is hurt, and the Senators get here the night after a game in Boston.

Ottawa won its opener in Toronto but plays in Boston the night before this game, and Jake Sanderson's re-aggravated lower-body injury puts its top defense pair in doubt. Detroit has scored 2 goals in 2 home losses while playing without Dylan Larkin, who has asked for a trade and is on injured reserve, and Marco Kasper. Whether those centers return, and how much the back-to-back costs Ottawa, will decide the game.

Ottawa Senators
  • Scored in every period of the opening win in Toronto
  • Chabot and Eklund both produced in the opener
  • 2nd night of a back-to-back after Monday in Boston
  • Sanderson re-aggravated lower-body injury, status unclear
  • Zub on injured reserve, so defense is already thin
Detroit Red Wings
  • Rested at home while Ottawa travels in from Boston
  • Larkin hoped to return for this game, per reports
  • 2 goals in 2 home losses to open
  • Kasper not evaluated until the day of the game
  • Larkin trade saga has the home crowd turning

Start with Ottawa, because the Senators have 1 game to play before this one. They opened with a 3-2 win at Scotiabank Arena. Thomas Chabot had a goal and an assist, Eklund scored the 3rd-period winner, and Ottawa scored in every period. Next is a trip to Boston on Monday, October 5. Whatever happens there decides what kind of legs and what kind of blue line Travis Green brings to Detroit 24 hours later.

The blue line is the real worry. Jake Sanderson re-aggravated a lower-body injury that already cost him part of camp, and he left the Leafs game at 12:45 of the 1st period. Green said Sanderson pulled himself before it got worse and that the team would evaluate him ahead of this Bruins-Red Wings back-to-back. Artem Zub is already on injured reserve. Without Sanderson, Ottawa's top pair becomes a guess, and the guessing would happen on the 2nd night of a back-to-back.

Detroit has had its own messy week. Dylan Larkin asked for a trade, lost the captaincy and went on non-roster injured reserve with an upper-body injury. Fans booed him during introductions at the home opener, and the Red Wings lost that one 2-0 to the Rangers. Coach Todd McLellan put it bluntly: "He's got to live with the ramifications of asking for a trade." At least 1 report had the team hoping Larkin could return for this game, the 3rd of the season. That is a hope, not a plan, and nobody knows how the building would greet him if he played.

The center problem goes further than Larkin. Marco Kasper picked up an upper-body injury in the opener, and McLellan said he would get a better read on him Tuesday. That puts his status for this game in the same day-of category. Against Winnipeg, the thin middle showed. The Jets scored 2 in the 1st and led 3-1 after 2. Detroit scored in the 2nd and the 3rd but never found the equalizer, and Stuart Skinner got his first win as a Jet.

Through 2 home games the Red Wings have 2 goals, and both came in a game they were already chasing. Ottawa has the opposite profile so far: a road win built on goals from different lines. The schedule gives this game its shape. Detroit gets the rested legs and the home ice. Ottawa gets the form and the travel. Who actually plays, Larkin and Kasper on one side and Sanderson on the other, will tell you more than either team's record does.
