TLDR: On paper the Sharks have the better record in this California matchup, and that alone makes Wednesday's trip to Los Angeles worth a look. The Kings have looked lost at their own rink, and San Jose has a stop at home before it gets there.

The San Jose Sharks (7-7-1 as of November 1) visit the Los Angeles Kings, who are 4-7-2 and 1-4-0 at home, after hosting Calgary first. San Jose is missing Alexander Wennberg and three others to injured reserve, and its coach called out the effort in a 5-1 home loss to Ottawa. LA is waiting on day-to-day forward Adrian Kempe and has been putting shots on net without turning them into home wins.

San Jose Sharks
  • Better record than LA entering November
  • Scored 6 in Ottawa during recent stretch
  • Wennberg on IR, thin down the middle
  • Coach said team was outworked in 5-1 loss
  • Lost 3 of last 4 as of November 1
Los Angeles Kings
  • Laviolette says they're generating lots of shots
  • Kempe only day-to-day, could return
  • Just 1-4-0 at Crypto.com Arena
  • Lost a 1-goal game on a 3rd-period power-play goal

San Jose doesn't come straight here. The Sharks host the Calgary Flames on November 2 first, so the 7-7-1 record and 2-3 run in their last 5 are as of today, and both will move before puck drop. That Calgary game decides a lot of what this preview can't yet: whether San Jose gets out of a funk where it has dropped 3 of its last 4, and who is fresh on the back end. The Kings have no game before this one, so the version of LA that shows up Wednesday is the one sitting in front of us now.

Ryan Warsofsky didn't hold back after the Senators skated away with a 5-1 win at SAP Center. He said his team was "just slow all night" and "got outworked all over the ice," and Michael Misa had the only Sharks goal. Some of that is a roster problem. Alexander Wennberg is on injured reserve, which takes a veteran center out of the middle, and Igor Chernyshov, Quentin Musty and goaltender Kyle Keyser are all on IR too. San Jose is playing a short forward group and asking its young players to cover for it.

Los Angeles has a strange problem: the Kings are a worse team at home. They're 4-7-2 overall and just 1-4-0 at Crypto.com Arena after Tage Thompson scored twice, including the go-ahead power-play goal in the 3rd period, in a 3-2 Buffalo win. Peter Laviolette liked the effort and said his team "generated a lot of offense, put a lot of pucks at the net," with Anton Forsberg making 28 saves at the other end. Corey Perry and Andre Lee scored, but in a 1-goal game that wasn't enough.

The biggest name to watch before Wednesday is Adrian Kempe. He missed the Buffalo game with an undisclosed injury and is day-to-day, and he has 8 points (3 goals, 5 assists) in 12 games. Without him the Kings gave Martin Chromiak his NHL debut, and he played 17:31, including 4:27 on the power play. Whether Kempe is back or Chromiak keeps that power-play role is the lineup question for LA's side.

It's a game between 2 teams that both need it. San Jose has wins over Ottawa and Vancouver in its recent stretch and has shown it can score, like the 6-2 win in Ottawa. It has also been shut out 2-0 by Buffalo and blown out at home by the Senators. The Kings put pucks on net and still can't win at home. Puck drop is 7:00 PM PT, and the Sharks' result against Calgary will tell us a lot about how the trip south shapes up.
