TLDR: Colorado won the first one in Dallas without Cale Makar. A day later the rivals meet again at Ball Arena, and Makar might be back while Dallas still has a hole down the middle.

Colorado beat Dallas 3-2 in Dallas on Tuesday without Cale Makar, and the rivals meet again a day later in Denver. Makar could return after the birth of his twins, while Wyatt Johnston's status after an illness scratch is unknown for a Stars team missing Duchene and Kiviranta and scoring 2 or fewer in 3 straight losses. Colorado is the home favorite, and the availability of those 2 players is what this game turns on.

Dallas Stars
  • Shut out San Jose and Buffalo in consecutive games
  • Tuesday's game was tied 1-1 into the 2nd
  • 2 or fewer goals in 3 straight losses
  • Johnston (illness), Duchene, Kiviranta all missing down the middle
  • Second night of a back-to-back, on the road at altitude
Colorado Avalanche
  • Won in Dallas without Makar; Necas scored twice
  • Makar possibly back after the birth of his twins
  • Scored 6 and 7 in 2 of their last 5

Tuesday's game in Dallas went to the Avalanche, 3-2, and it went to them in the 2nd period. Artturi Lehkonen and Tyler Seguin traded goals in the 1st, then Martin Necas scored twice in a 2-0 middle frame and the Stars spent the 3rd chasing. They got 1 back and that was it. Now both clubs get on a plane and play again Wednesday, October 14, with puck drop at 6:30 PM MT. Whoever adjusts fastest on no sleep probably wins it.

The lineups are the story. Makar sat Tuesday because he was in Denver for the birth of his twins, and Jared Bednar said he could play Wednesday. He had 7 points in 5 games before he left, so getting him back changes the whole blue line. Devon Toews and Sam Malinski were the top pair and ran both power-play units without him. Dallas lost Wyatt Johnston to an illness right before puck drop Tuesday, the first game he has missed in his career after 333 straight, and the club hasn't said whether he plays in Denver. Colorado is the home favorite on the board, and most of what moves that number between now and puck drop comes down to those 2 names.

The Stars aren't short on defense. Earlier this month they shut out San Jose 5-0 and Buffalo 4-0 in consecutive games. Scoring is the issue: they have put up 2 or fewer goals in each of their last 3 losses, and the center depth is thin. Matt Duchene is out about 3 months after core surgery, Joel Kiviranta is out with a lower-body injury, and without Johnston, Dallas had to dress 7 defensemen Tuesday, with Kyle Capobianco drawing in.

Colorado's start has been loud in both directions. The Avalanche beat St. Louis 6-1 at home and won 7-3 in Calgary, then gave up 6 at home to Toronto in a 3-6 loss and dropped a 3-2 game in Winnipeg. They're 4-2-0, and going into Dallas without their best player and winning tells you more than any of those scores. The forward group isn't whole either: Logan O'Connor is on injured reserve and Zachary L'Heureux is listed out.

The schedule hurts both teams about the same. Each played Tuesday night and each traveled, although Colorado's flight ends at home and Dallas's ends at altitude. If Makar dresses, the Avalanche have their whole top pair back against a Stars team that has struggled to score. If Johnston comes back too, Dallas has its center depth again and this looks a lot like Tuesday's game, which was tied at 1 until Necas took over.
