TLDR: Dallas beat the Blue Jackets 3-1 a few days ago in Texas. On Thursday, November 5, Columbus gets its rematch on home ice at Nationwide Arena, and the Stars may be playing it without their best defenseman.

Dallas comes to Columbus at 9-5-1 and on a 2-game win streak as of Wednesday, having beaten the Blue Jackets 3-1 in their last meeting. Miro Heiskanen's upper-body exit in Washington is the variable that matters, on top of a blue line and center group already missing 4 players to IR. Columbus has home ice on the front half of a back-to-back, with Buffalo next.

Dallas Stars
  • Beat Columbus 3-1 in the last meeting
  • Robertson coming off a hat trick in Washington
  • Won 2 straight as of Wednesday
  • Heiskanen left Washington game with upper-body injury
  • Oettinger allowed 4 goals on 20 shots last start
  • Duchene, Back, Capobianco, Krys all on IR
Columbus Blue Jackets
  • Home ice for a quick rematch at Nationwide
  • Dallas blue line may be missing Heiskanen
  • Lost 3-1 to Dallas in the last meeting
  • Front half of a back-to-back, Buffalo next

As of Wednesday the Stars sit at 9-5-1 and have won 2 straight. The second win was a strange one in Washington. Jason Robertson scored a hat trick, and a 4-goal 2nd period chased Charlie Lindgren from the Capitals' net. Dallas then needed all of a 5-3 cushion as Washington took the 3rd period 2-1. A 6-5 road win is still a win, but nobody on the Dallas bench will call it clean.

The bigger story from that night was Miro Heiskanen. He left after his first shift of the 2nd period with an upper-body injury and didn't come back. He's listed day-to-day. That label is vague for a player who was ruled out mid-game, and Dallas hasn't given a timeline in anything we could confirm. The blue line was already thin: Kyle Capobianco and Luke Krys are both on injured reserve. Matt Duchene is out about 3 months after core surgery, and Oskar Back is on long-term IR, so the center depth is stretched too.

Heiskanen is the swing factor on this card. He drives the Dallas transition game and eats the hard minutes. Without him, everyone else on the back end moves up a slot against a Columbus team that has seen this group very recently. Whether he plays, and how Dallas covers his minutes if he doesn't, is the first thing to watch before puck drop.

Goaltending is the other worry for Dallas. Jake Oettinger allowed 4 goals on 20 shots in Washington, and that's not a line Dallas can live with in back-to-back starts. The Stars' last 5 games have produced 37 combined goals. That includes a 6-3 win over the Islanders and losses of 5-1 to New Jersey and 5-2 to Montreal. When this team leaks, it leaks in bunches.

Columbus has the scheduling quirk. The Blue Jackets hosted Colorado on Tuesday and have Buffalo the night after this one, so Thursday is the front half of a back-to-back. That makes the goalie choice and how hard the coaches lean on the top pairs worth watching. They also lost 3-1 in Dallas in the last meeting, so they know exactly what's coming.

Puck drop is 7:00 PM ET. Dallas is the team with the results this week and the injury list to match. Columbus has home ice, a fresh look at an opponent it just played, and a chance to test a Stars defense that may not have its anchor.
